Tra-la-laaa! The wait is over! Dav Pilkey--ahem--we mean, George and Harold, the authors of SUPER DIAPER BABY, are back with their second epic novel! Now with super-cool foil covers! Shiny! Fun!

Meet Ook and Gluk, the stars of this sensationally silly graphic novel from the creators of Captain Underpants! It's 500,001 BC, and Ook and Gluk's hometown of Caveland, Ohio, is under attack by an evil corporation from the future. When Ook, Gluk, and their little dinosaur pal Lily are pulled through a time portal to 2222, they discover a future world that's even more devastated than their own. Luckily, they find a friend in Master Wong, a martial arts instructor who trains them in the ways of kung fu. Now all they have to do is travel back in time 502,223 years and save the day!

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Michael Jung
From the creator of Captain Underpants comes this hilarious and gross story of Ook and Gluk, two cave boy pranksters who love showing up Big Chief Goppernopper by building skateboards just as the chief invents the wheel, or firing their canon just as Goppernopper claims he has discovered fire. But when Goppernopper gets a visit from his time-traveling descendant J.P. Goppernoppper, he decides to use his relative's advanced technology to plunder his entire time period and show all of Caveland who is boss. Now it is up to Ook and Gluk (and their pet dinosaur Lily) to travel forward into the future, learn kung fu from martial arts teacher Master Wong, and return to their own time to take down the Goppernoppers! It is a silly, irrelevant story credited to George Beard and Harold Hutchins, the boy cartoonists from the "Captain Underpants" series that is full of typical Pilkey-sight-gags—including intentionally misspelled words in every word balloon, "flip-o-rama" animation pages that show dinosaurs throwing up on bad guys, and plenty of gratuitous cartoon-style violence. Fans of Captain Underpants will love it (just do not expect it to teach kids any lessons about good spelling). Reviewer: Michael Jung
School Library Journal
Gr 3–6—The year is 500,001 BC. The town is Caveland, OH. Ook Schadowski and Gluk Jones have a knack for getting under the skin of no-good Chief Goppernopper, the ruler of Caveland. When one of his distant descendants uses a portal to travel back in time from AD 2222 and steal natural resources, our heroes jump into action, traveling to the future, where they learn kung fu and eventually put a stop to the evildoers. The humor is completely immature, and for the target audience, completely hilarious. Billed as The Second Graphic Novel by George Beard and Harold Hutchins—The Adventures of Super Diaper Baby (Scholastic, 2002) was the first—the book is crafted to look like it was written and illustrated by kids, employing rough black-and-white pencil and watercolor artwork. Also in keeping with the ruse, words are often misspelled—a fact that will drive many teachers and parents bonkers, but will likely have little effect on the spelling skills of youngsters. Few books can inspire the level of devotion seen by the "Captain Underpants" series, but Pilkey has likely re-created that feat with the joyous Ook and Gluk, a book destined to fly off the shelves and circulate until the cover falls off.—Travis Jonker, Dorr Elementary School, MI

It's pretty deep philosophically. Master Wong teaches the boys that trophies and accolades do not make a good person. One can use poison as medicine. It doesn't matter what size you are, you can save the world. It's a book that empowers kids to think beyond what they can see. Parents need to really READ the book. Dav Pilkey delivers good messages through his kid friendly humor. The story is told by two young boys (therefore there are misspellings) and it is a good story. Good messages delivered through exciting adventures and laughs. The illustrations are lively.

This book is making the rounds in the 8 year old boy circles. Loads of fun and they can't put it down. Just the cover graphics are enough for them. We usually get books from the library but this is the kind of book that the kids look at again and again.

Please overlook the misspellings and grammatical errors. It's obvious Dav Pilkey knows his audience well. He has always inspired kids' creativity and continues to inspire kids with this new adventure. If you are over 10 years old, imagine yourself at age 9 or 10. It will make you want to write your own adventure.

BTW, if you like Captain Underpants, Daniel Boom AKS Loud Boy, The Defense of Thaddeus Ledbetter and Butt Wars you will love this book. I mostly read comic kinds of books and things that are funny and ook and gluk are both. Tex
