‘Do animals fall in love?’

I posed that question to a friend of mine who loves animals. He has two horses, three dogs, two cats, a cow, two goats, and a fat little miniature pig that share the farm he calls home. He said that from what he had observed over the years living closely with his beloved pets was that they seemed to have developed a sincere attachment for one another, -- except for the cats—but that he didn’t think animals could attain the deep devotion of affection – Love -- that we humans experience. As for cats? He said that even if he were wrong about animals not being able to realize that level of devotedness, that that degree of esteem for someone was definitely out for felines because they’re just too independent, too self-absorbed.

For years I was inclined to believe that theory of his about cats, until one day I heard about a series of events concerning two cats, Sami One Eye and Mr. Big Foot, that changed my mind; it made me believe, without any reservations, that cats do fall in love. In those events,
Sami One Eye and Mr. Big Foot survived the tragedies that befell them only because of the great love that they had for one another. How love saved their lives fascinated me. I’m sure, as you read the story of those events, you will be just as bewitched by their trials and tribulations and how love was their savior, as I was. Here then, is that love story. Enjoy.
