Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
Young Snail delights in being the class messenger and running important errands for his teacher throughout the school. His errands bring him in contact with some unusual characters and adventures-all of which leave his teacher bewildered AND speechless! A genuinely funny read with just the right amount of repetition to make beginning readers feel at home. An "I Can Read Book" - Level 2.
Carolyn Phelan
When his teacher asks for a classroom helper to pick up books at the school library, Snail volunteers. A detour to the water fountain brings disaster, though: a flood and a whirlpool that is visible only to Snail (and the reader). From then on, Snail is the only volunteer for school errands, perhaps because the other students look forward to the tales he tells when he returns. The simple line drawings washed with delicate pastels have character enough to complement the story's understated humor. Skating a fine line between fantasy and reality, Stadler creates an amusing trio of stories for beginning readers.

My son first read this when he was well beyond the 'early reader' stage of reading. Normally he wouldn't think of reading such a 'babyish' book. But this book was funny enough to grab his attention and keep it. The illustrations really convey the fun of the book. This book is a lot more fun than most books at this reading level.
