Adventurous Spirit: A Story about Ellen Swallow Richards

by Ethlie Ann Vare, Jennifer Hagerman

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 3-5-- An interesting, accurate portrayal of the scientist's life. In this readable biography, Vare traces Richards's youth, education, and career as a chemist. She details her study of water pollution and the introduction of a nutritious school lunch program in the Boston area. The full-page, black-and-white pencil drawings are effective and appropriately placed. (Since they were inspired by actual photographs, one must wonder why the photos weren't used to add a greater degree of authenticity to the text.) Quoted material is taken from writings by the subject, her friends, and family, giving depth and immediacy to this factual account. Youngsters will enjoy reading about the struggles and successes of this noted environmentalist. --April L. Judge, Thousand Oaks Library, CA
