This is what Jesus must have been like. Eugene V. Debs is presented as a humble human trying to make the world a better place. His love life came second to his mission and that caused him to marry unwisely, but he lived all aspects of his life honorably. He was a martyr for the labor movement, serving an arbitrary six months in jail for contempt of court, then an actual prison term for his socialist, anti-war views. During the latter term he actually ran for president, earning over a million votes. Like Jesus he dedicated his life to bringing about political and social change that continued after his death. If a book like this one could be written about me I would value it far more than a gravestone.
