Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Beginning with a definition of advertising, this resource work details each aspect of presenting a product to the consumer. The seven chapters progress through planning an advertising campaign, the mechanics of a working agency, the creative process of publicity, purchasing space to advertise, and the technology needed for production. Each division is abundantly illustrated with professionals actively involved in the aspect of advertising under discussion. Special features include job profiles of the host of people needed to move a product from conception to sales. Other helpful guides include suggestions on how to get a job in the industry, a glossary, and useful addresses where more information may be gathered. The book was first published in England and is part of the MediaWise series. A scholarly presentation, this volume fills a gap between media and manufacturing for librarians, teachers, and guidance counselors. 2004, Smart Apple Media, Ages 13 to 18.

Gr 6 Up-These colorful overviews integrate vocational guidance and media literacy into the discussion of the ways that the economics, professional organization, and mechanics of the film and advertising industries shape what reaches the public's eyes, ears, emotions, and pocketbooks. Though they are neither exhaustive treatments of career opportunities in the fields nor complete examinations of the nature of the messages the industries generate, they do a good job of introducing readers to both. Discrete, page-length job profiles are interspersed within the main texts, along with "Media Fact" sidebars and a generous number of photographs, most of which are in color. The fact that the books were originally published in Britain in 2002 means that many of the film stills and print specimens intended to add freshly baked appeal have already begun to stale. While these books are easy to read, they never condescend, nor do they glamorize these occupations as being anything other than the highly competitive and demanding jobs that they are. The many sidebars do not undermine the coherence of the texts or reduce them to being a disparate collection of meaningless factoids. These qualities recommend the titles for secondary libraries seeking basic material on these fields.-Jeffrey Hastings, Highlander Way Middle School, Howell, MI Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
