Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Claudia Cristina Cortez is a thirteen year old with a number of friends. She has a lot of advice about how to make friends, how to be a friend and how to recognize when someone is not really a friend. There is also a section about how to fight fair and how to disagree with a friend without losing the friendship. She even tells readers how to end a friendship on good terms. While aimed at the middle school reader, this book has good advice for older readers too and the layout will appeal to middle school through high school readers. The illustrations are a combination of border decorations and thumbnail sketches of Claudia's friends, much like doodling in a notebook so readers will relate well to the images. Even though the book is marketed as fiction, it is really a straightforward advice book. Perhaps the marketing will make readers who would not glance twice at an advice book pick it up and read it. Back material includes a brief biographical sketch of the author and the illustrator, a glossary, some discussion questions and suggested activities, comments from readers, a list of other books about friendship, and other books featuring Claudia and her friends.
