Meet the Author

Paul Kater was born in the Netherlands in 1960. He quickly developed a feel for languages but did not pursue a career in those as his native language, Dutch, did not offer many options in that time. After learning far too much about computers he started to make a living with them. During all that time he always wrote short stories, little things to entertain family and friends and also himself with.Since 2003 he's been writing more seriously, first posting his scribblings on an amateur writer's mailing list, and then publishing shorter and longer stories on the internet. Due to the international character of the Internet, all Paul's stories so far are written in English.Paul currently lives in Cuijk, in the Netherlands, with his two cats, his books and the many characters he's developed in the past years, who claim he is a figment of their imagination.Visit the author at paulkater.com

    Was this a Sample piece?

If this was a sampler of a larger work, then it needs to be labled as such. If not, then the author needs to work seriously on his end game. Most of the piece was fairly well done, with a few rough edges - nothing unreadable or unforgivable... worth reading, until the ending! To say that it was abrupt would be understatement. This would make a reasonably good first 1/3rd of a novel; please write the rest.

What is it about mechanoids that brings out the sinister?

At first I was a little confused by the combination of English and American terms and slang in this one, then I saw that the author is Dutch and became more forgiving. The use of English language needs more practice and especially the proper use of commas needs work.

However, the ideas of the story are expressed adequately and hold attention as the reader is drawn into a mystery. The story holds up to the end fairly well. I'm always happy when I can't guess exactly how a mystery will end, so was not disappointed. The only real gaping mistake was the assumption that customers in a tavern would not have paid first, maybe that isn't how things are done in the Netherlands.

All things considered, I think this author has a good imagination and could be worth watching to see how he develops.

    Salacious

Adult themes and bad language. Couldn't finish, but what I did read was a bit cliche. Not my cup of tea.

    Different

This is a radical departure from the fun filled, tongue-in-cheek approach of the "Hilda" series. The writing style was interesting but it didn't really draw me in. Liked it okay.

    OK Short Story

This short story has a reasonable premise and an interesting world behind it, but it has the pacing of a novel in a tiny page count, so not much develops.
