Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

Praise for IF YOU LIVED IN COLONIAL TIMES
"Gives a great deal of information and is nicely appropriate to the capability of the beginning reader." -BULLETIN OF THE CENTER FOR CHILDREN'S BOOKS
Children's Literature - Elizabeth Fronk
The classic tales from Aesop appear in this slim volume with black, white and gray-scale illustrations. Each fable ends with the story's moral. The cover boasts of having more than 60 stories; it includes the familiar ones appear along with fables that are less familiar. As the front cover's illustration promises, the Tortoise and the Hare's story appears as does the story of the wolf in sheep's clothing and the lion with the bulls. Each tale is told succinctly, usually taking up only a page or less; reluctant readers can welcome this. The moral displays boldly at the bottom center of the tale. However, in many stories, the dialogue appears the same as descriptions. While this may save book space, having dialogue spelled out could make the tale more accessible to a reader. Because of this format, many of the tales appear stilted. The lack of color throughout the tales also does not help the tales' accessibility or appeal. With other Aesop collections available, such as Jerry Pinkney's, the only benefits for this collection are the book's size and its cost. For those on a very limited budget and being unable to print from an online source, this paperback might be an option for second- to fourth-grade readers. Reviewer: Elizabeth Fronk

In this book there are many tales that are retold by Ann McGovern. They are used to teach morals, especially to children. Some fables that are in the book are, ¿The Fox and the Grapes¿, ¿The Shepherd Boy and the Wolf¿, and ¿The Goose with the Golden Eggs.¿ The morals that are portrayed in these fables have very good lessons that teach kids what not to do in the future while they are growing up. I would recommend this book to a friend and to young readers (children).
