Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD (Bridgeport Hospital)
Description: Individuals who have had massive weight loss require a distinctive surgical approach for the aesthetic reshaping of their outer body. The authors have assembled a group of authors who are well versed in this area and are able to provide a creative yet practical approach to deal with this exceptional complex set of problems.
Purpose: The purpose is to address the desire of patients who have experienced massive weight loss to achieve a normal outer appearance. The book accomplishes this feat by reviewing surgical options and issues involved in these body restoring procedures.
Audience: The authors are practiced plastic surgeons in the weight loss reshaping arena. In that recontouring surgery is fraught with potential problems, it should only be undertaken by seasoned plastic surgeons. However, the information that this book serves up is appropriate for those wishing to learn about this subject with the eventual goal of taking on this complicated surgery.
Features: The color plates and photographs are positioned well for optimal didactic impact throughout this well written book. There is a suitable amount of overlap between the various authors, as would be expected from a subject that must cover multiple regions of the body for optimal corrective results. Weight loss must precede the corrective aesthetic procedures; hence, the prelude covers weight loss options and evaluation methods after weight loss. Ensuing chapters discuss the various personal approaches of the authors for the reshaping of breasts, abdomen, chest, back, face and the extremities. Key informational points are presented in each chapter as are the preparatory evaluation stages, operative methods, postoperative care, complications, and management recommendations. The before and after photographs afford the reader an opportunity to evaluate these methods from both an objective and subjective vantage point.
Assessment: In that obesity and massive weight loss is prevalent in our society, it behooves the surgeon who wishes to undertake weight loss reshaping procedures to know and to understand how to provide their patients state-of-the-art results. A reading of this book will bring these surgeons that much closer to achieving the desired results.
From the Publisher
