Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This book is part of the "Countries and Cultures" series and offers young students an introduction to this landlocked country with a diverse population. There are chapters covering the land, history, economy and culture and each chapter begins with a sidebar of fast facts about the subject. The chapter "Afghanistan's History and Government" includes details of recent events as well as information about the planned 2004 elections. Students may be somewhat surprised to read of the restrictions placed upon the citizens, especially the women, during the reign of the Taliban. Girls were not allowed to go to school and women had to wear veils and could not work outside the home. Maps, pictures of national symbols, a timeline, glossary and even a recipe for khatai cookies are provided for readers. There are also suggestions for resources for further study including books, Internet sites and useful addresses. 2004, Capstone Press, Ages 10 to 12.
