Overview

Afghanistan Revealed aims to enlighten readers on one of the world's most complex and fascinating countries. This ebook takes us beyond the media focus on politics and war into the lives of the Afghan people, and the forces that have shaped their individual and collective history.

A range of distinguished specialists provide insights from the earliest Aryan migrations and the emergence of Islam, through Afghanistan's role as a key Central Asian trade centre, the Anglo-Afghan wars and the Soviet invasion, to the emergence of a post-Taliban state. We are reminded of how the Afghans have suffered in centuries of violent conflict and have stubbornly resisted all efforts to invade and dominate their land. We are presented with the tasks Afghanistan faces after the 2014 withdrawal of NATO-led combat troops, specifically the need to rebuild the country, tap into its huge economic potential, and provide political and social harmony.

Readable and accessible, Afghanistan Revealed is essential background for anyone wishing to understand why peace and stability in the region have been so elusive. It is also an indispensable tool for foreign and Afghan policymakers who play a role in determining Afghanistan's future.

I really enjoyed Afghanistan Revealed and learned a great deal. A wonderful book for anyone who  wishes to know more about Afghanistan, it's history, culture and people. So many are risking their lives  to ensure a safe future for this country about which many of us know so little. The extremely  knowledgeable contributors have been brought together to create a very readable view of Afghanistan.  I am sure it will also appeal to anyone who has loved ones in the Services, or anyone who is working in Afghanistan. It should be available in all libraries .

This is a must read book. It lays out simply, yet evocatively the history, culture and the nuanced complexities of Afghanistan. A country, that has fascinated researchers, explorers, strategists and soliders for centuries. Each chapter reveals something different and makes us thirsty to read more. I would highly recommend this book to the first time reader on Afghanistan, as well as to those who lived and served in this endlessly fascinating country. Afghanistan has inspired all whom have heard about her or crossed her mountainous terrain. Enjoy the read. Its well very well worth your time and attention. Highly recommended!

Bravo, bravo to the authors of this timely, brilliant and masterful book.  Afghanistan is indeed about to embark upon yet another challenging chapter in its history in 2014.  This book provides context to the reality that lies ahead for Afghanistan.  And, it provides hope as the reader is given greater insight into the resilience of the Afghan people.   To anyone who is thinking ahead on Afghanistan -- do add this book to your list.

This book is an essential read to anyone trying to understand the complexities of Afghanistan, or purely just for someone interested in finding out a little more about the country constantly in our news. A collection of accounts from some superb authors on different aspects of life in Afghanistan, the book provides something for everyone. History, culture, religion, war, women, cuisine - it's all there. Highly recommended :)

I served two tours in Afghanistan, one as military spokesman for the NATO forces there (under command of UK's Sir General David Richards).  This book offers poignant perpectives from leading personalities, compelling background and beautiful pictures in combination you simply cannot find anywhere else.  Contributing author Whitney Azoy (who helped me to a fair deal on the Afghan carpet now in my dining room, and more importantly to friendship with the merchant) is right, life in Afghanistan is richer and more complicated than most of us know.  And ultimately that's a very good thing.  "Afghanistan Revealed" gets this across, in winning fashion, and for a great cause.  - Luke Knittig

A beautifully written and well constructed book by distinguished specialists passionate about Afghanistan who wish to share this with others. Thought provoking insight into this often misunderstood country with its charming people and stunning landscapes; a rare glimpse behind the often negative press. I would recommend it to anyone interested in Afghanistan wishing to discover more about the history that shaped it, the extrordinary changes over the last decade and the future challenges that lie ahead.

Expected more of an in-depth look at the people, however, this was much more centered around politics and ancient history. Was really hoping for more of an updated look at the culture, traditions, beliefs, etc. While I understand that history is what shaped it, felt it was more of a retrospective than introspective look, which I hoped for. Additionally, each chapter seems to repeat the things previously read.

I liked that there were many experts with a vast store of knowledge writing this rather than one author. Lots of detail so you must be alert when reading it. Covers history and culture very well. I will refer to it often in the future.

This book was a great general knowledge book. As an American I have heard a lot of Afghanistan news, but I didn't really have an understanding of the country. The book gives a good history of the country, reviews the major political and religious parties, and gives a view of the peoples attitudes towards Americans and towards their own futures. It is not a boring book; the stories are amazing. I now love the average Afghans that just want what all parents want: A brighter future for their families.

Salute to the authors of this book. Very informative, interesting. A must to read if you want to know & understand the Afghanistan's life & culture. The range of conflicts there is so complex & mind boggling. My prayer to the Afghan people who aspire to live in peace, dignity & prosperity.

With the above said, I'd then point out that the writings (multiple authors) is a great idea as one person's account or view is not the end all and be all. The chapters are well written on various aspects of the Afghanistan area, its neighbors, history, religion and other topics related to the prime topic. I enjoyed learning about Afghanistan from multiple views and considerations.
