Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Have you ever thought about traveling through the Sahara desert, sailing along the Nile, the world's largest river, or climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro? If so, this may be the book for you. As you journey through this volume in the "Pull Ahead" series, you are introduced to the regions, the animals, the vegetation, and the people of Africa. Colorful photographs and clearly labeled maps accompany the text, which allows the reader to visualize more easily the attractions Africa has to offer. Children will learn about the baobab trees and the date palm trees. They learn where hippos and gorillas can be found. The great pyramids of Egypt are also featured. When reading about the regions of Africa, you learn that Nigeria is the largest nation in the western region, that many of the people in the northern region follow the religion of Islam, and that the Masai people live in the eastern region of Africa. A useful addition to any classroom library, this book is ideal for early readers due to its compact size, large print and bolded vocabulary words. A glossary, an index, a page filled with "Cool Facts about Africa" and a list of resources such as books and websites for further study are also provided. One possible drawback is that the information is not divided into sections which, at times, would be helpful for the reader. 2004, Lerner Publications Company, Ages 4 to 8.
