Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This informational book on the continent of Africa is an easy read packed with lots of information for young readers and researchers. The layout of the book includes a fast facts section that includes a list of all African countries with a corresponding map. Population, cities, rivers, highest and lowest points are also listed. Maps throughout the book show Africa in many different views. It shows how big Africa is compared to the United States and where Africa is situated in the world in relation to other continents and oceans. The book gives information about Africa that makes it different compared to other continents including the different rainforest, savanna, and desert habitats. Africa is also divided into the different regions—Northern, West, Central, East, and Southern Africa. Maps and information on these regions is presented. Pictures and information of the Nile, Sahara Desert, African animals, crops, Great Rift Valley, African cities, and people is also presented. The back of the book includes a map quiz, words to know (glossary), a reading list, and Internet sites. It is part of the "Continents" series. This book is recommended for schools and libraries. 2003, Capstone/Bridgestone, Ages 5 to 8.

K-Gr 3-These books combine visual comparisons, geographical facts, and color-coded Mercator maps with well-written explanatory texts. Definitions appear on the bottom of each page on which key words are introduced. Both books include places to see and a map showing their locations. The full-color graphics are well done and inviting. These titles are uniformly and consistently laid out so that any reader familiar with one will easily be able to utilize the other. Both Antarctica and Africa are good additions to basic geography collections.-Karen Land, Greenport Public School, NY Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
