Overview

Those of us who have never had the privilege of visiting Africa can take solace in this splendid pictorial journey across the immense and magnificent continent, courtesy of photographer Olivier Follmi. A worthy companion to Follmi's lovely Offerings for Humanity series, which celebrates the day-to-day spirituality of an entire continent throughout the year, Africa follows India and Homage to the Himalayas in assembling the lensman's most spectacular pictures of this rich and diverse land. From the deserts of Namibia to the savannah of Cameroon, from the Himba shepherds to the Peul nomads, this moving collection of 200 images takes readers on a voyage of discovery through the heart of African life and thought, revealing a mosaic of cultures and peoples with beauty and depth.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

The daily images of an Africa beset by war and destruction and by sorrow and suffering are hard to forget. Föllmi's (Indian Wisdom) work offers another view, an Africa of majestic landscapes and a people of dignity and promise. In this companion to Föllmi's "Offerings for Humanity" series, which aims to enhance a culture's spiritual heritage through photographs, the distinguished photographer, his international colleagues, and a publisher of beautiful books have combined their expertise to produce an elegant elegy to this vast continent. The 200 vivid and varied images encompass deserts and mountains, family groups and isolated faces—all reflect the myriad experiences that are Africa. Brief philosophical, mystical, and historical texts offer insight into the minds and hearts of those involved in the Offerings for Humanity project, while thumbnail comments identify the locales and subjects. The contributors to this work are clearly enchanted with Africa, and this draws the viewer in. However, the book is a necessary purchase only for large public and academic collections and those specializing in photography and Africa.
