Undaunted by the massive land and culture expanse of Africa, this title effectively explores significant information related to the entire continent. The reader catches a glimpse of the rich cultural diversity found in a variety of its 53 countries. The author, Veronica Ellis, has designed a unique and clever format for introducing a topic that will intrigue elementary students. Six Afro-Bets Kids listen in as storyteller, Mr. Amegashie of Ghana, narrates, revealing tidbits linked to geography, history, art, music, animals, and religion. The insertion of the storyteller's hyena tale profiles the rich folktale heritage and may spur young readers to seek out the many choices in African folk literature. The mixture of attractively arranged black-and-white and colored photographs, artist's illustrations, diagrams, and maps enrich the text and provide clues to the riches of the African continent. However, the miniature maps limit research. The curious reader will often be left dangling when questions are not answered (Does Africa still have a lot of gold?) or when limited information is presented (okapi). There is no index, but a guide for pronunciation of unfamiliar words is included. Combine this title to enrich a social studies lesson or a Black History Month unit with Africa Is Not a Country by Margy Burns Knight and Masai and I by Virginia Kroll. Knight's book describes and illustrates life in many of the 53 African nations. Kroll's title compares the experiences in the day of two children—an African-American and an East African. Gr 2-5-- The Afro-Bets kids are a group of six black elementary-aged classmates. Mr. Amegashie, referred to as the storyteller, weaves the rich history and geography of Africa into a narrative for them. Beginning with ancient Africa, he relates how Africa had created great kingdoms and had made great strides long before modern-day powers existed. He also discusses the people, land features, animals, arts, and culture of the continent. As a resource for reports and background reading, this book gives a very basic overview. The illustrations are a mixture of full-color and black-and-white photographs and drawings; occasionally, the inclusion of the Afro-Bets kids on the same page with the other illustrations is distracting. There is a glossary but no index, and the three maps are disappointing as they are small, indistinct, and not very informative. The use of a storyteller to relay factual information is an interesting approach, and the Afro-Bets kids project positive images.
