As an added bonus, traditional African crafts are explored and taught, including Kente strip weaving, Adinkra, where stamped images are applied to fabrics, and Korhogo, in which symbolic animal and human figures are hand-painted onto coarsely woven cotton.

Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
YA-This book offers an exciting glimpse at West African cultures and presents beautiful, tangible, and useful items reflective of those cultures for readers to make. Shepard includes Korhogo cloths, Kente stools, Mud cloth desk clocks, and other traditional art objects and describes their history and symbolism. YAs will appreciate the MTV style of organization and flow. Dramatic photographs of the projects and of West Africans creating traditional art are included. Easy-to-understand drawings and directions assist readers. Most projects are suitable for home and school. Young people will likely be attracted to the wall hanging and rug sections. An eye-catching presentation that has broad appeal.-Brie Weisman, Family Resource Center, Coos County, NH Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|

'African Accents' Has Terrific Decorating Ideas!

Ms. Shepard's knowledge and appreciation for African textiles and crafts is shown with style throughout this book. The craft instructions are clear and easy to follow (even for a novice craftsperson like myself!) The photographs are well done also, they act as real motivators to try some of these great decorating ideas. How refreshing to see a crafts and decorating book with culturally diverse appeal!

    It's About Time!

This is a refreshing change from the other craft and decorating books out there! The descriptions and photos of how the fabrics are made are really informative. I liked the way it combines history with creative ideas for using the fabrics. Plus, the listing of where to find mudcloth and other materials is a big help. I'm working on the home office projects now and they're easier than they look in the end result. Great step-by step instructions.

African Accents - The Perfect Touch

Once I saw the title of this book, I knew I could not pass it up. I was not disappointed! Being a weekend crafter and sewer, I like to find quick and easy ways to accent my home, clothing and gifts. It's all here in African Accents. After reading the book I learned things I did not know about the history and art of West African designs and fabrics. African Accents is a 'must read' for those interested in ethnically diverse and fun ways to decorate the home and create unique gifts and crafts.
