Overview

Eight years of inspired work by a committee of more than 30 musicians and pastors, all leaders in African American worship and gospel music, have resulted in this compendium representing the common repertoire of African American churches across the United States. For the first time in an African American hymnal, traditional hymns and songs are notated to reflect performance practices found in the oral tradition of the black church in America. At a time when such traditions are falling victim to modern technology, this book strives to preserve this rich heritage for future generations. Presented are litanies for "Fifty-Two Sundays of Worshipful Celebration” outlining an African American church year, including such special days as Martin Luther King Sunday, Elders’ Day, Mother’s Day, and Men’s Day. Also included are 52 responsive scripture readings from the Old and New Testaments and an extensive index that includes scriptural and thematic cross-references.

A hymnal that is caring and comforting

I really like this hymnal! It is so good! Every week the choir and congregation sings from this hymnal and the joy that fills the sanctuary during each song is delightful! The music editor, Rev. Nolan Williams, is a music genius and humble servant of God and it is no surprise that he is apart of such a great work. I am so glad I purchased my own personal copy to privately reminisce and to use while practicing some tunes on my musical instrument. It is very comforting to read and an essential ministry or devotional tool.

    My Musical Friends

I was very excited about this hymnal. Many of my musical friends shared a part of editing and selecting the many wonderful Hymns, Spirituals and Gospel songs in this book. Dr. Jimmy Abington, Dr. Melva Costen, just to name a few. This hymnal will prove to be a classical in the years to come.

    New Hymnal a Divine Treasure!

I thank God for the editors of the African American Heritage Hymnal. I had an opportunity to meet the music editor, Mr. Nolan Williams,to hear some pieces from the book. The African American church has long needed a hymnal which expands music genres: anthems, spirituals, hymns, and gospel. I especially like the responsive readings and litanies which relate to the experiences of the African American family (church, family, children, holidays, prayer life, dedications, etc.). On January 5, our church (Flat Swamp Missionary Baptist) will debut this fine gift through a music ministry workshop with Licentiate Minister Frances Knight.
