Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Spiked with tangy tribal patterns from Africa and animated rhymes, this animal ABC book feeds youngsters what they love: exuberant illustrations and a bouncy text that invites their participation (``Elephant lumbers/ Frog leaps/ Giraffe dozes/ Hippo sleeps''). Featuring 26 animals whose survival in the wild is to various degrees threatened, debut author/artist Browne leaves serious issues and informative details for the fine-print endnotes, and her light approach proves inviting. A mix of the familiar (the elephant) and the unexpected (the Xoona moth) will arrest kids' attention as they ``prowl'' and ``growl,'' ``mutter'' and ``flutter'' their way through the alphabet. Adults, meanwhile, can slip in information gleaned from the notes. As electric-colored creatures pounce or perch in a fantastically patterned jungle, the heat fairly radiates from these pulsating pages. Ages 3-7. (Sept.)

"Antbear naps. Bushbaby blinks. Crocodile snaps. Dassie drinks..." With vivid colors, twenty-six creatures from the African continent are depicted in this alphabet book. The text is one of simple rhyme. The illustrations are paintings that bring to life the feeling of Africa through the clever use of bold tribal patterns. The reader is shown mammals and insects-some known, some not so well known, some of which are even endangered. Notes on each creature are provided at the end of the book for adults to share with children. A breathtaking book that is a visual sensation. First published by Barefoot Books Ltd., United Kingdom.

Unlike many picture books about Africa that use a smoky, earth-toned palette, this animal alphabet book is dominated by full-page paintings that are vibrantly, almost fluorescently, colored. With thick black lines and textures that resemble woodcuts, the compositions are underscored by patterns incorporating African motifs and characterizations that are whimsical. For instance, the lion may be "fierce," but he looks mighty friendly. The simple rhyming text has an appealing jauntiness: "Antbear naps / Bushbaby blinks / Crocodile snaps / Dassie drinks." As is the case in many similar offerings, the substantive information is relegated to an afterword, where size, classification, social group, diet, habitat, and gestation are noted. The beasts are also identified as "endangered," "vulnerable," or "specially-protected." Nice.
