Text on the making of the assorted articles and their use or place in everyday life or ritual with accompanying photographs relates also how some of the articles remain unchanged and how others have been affected by a tribe's contact with outsiders such as traders or colonial powers. Carved wooden objects, stonework, the colorful beads and clothing of many African tribes, metal objects, and leather accouterments are covered. Some of the color photographs of varying sizes and perspectives on every page, including many full-page photographs, show Africans wearing or using certain objects other photographs are close-ups revealing details of workmanship, pattern, or motif. Collectors will find the more detailed photos useful for reference for determining the authenticity, tribal origin or part of Africa, and degree of tradition and change of many objects. Though 'African Elegance' is not comprehensive and is partly a celebration of the diverse crafts and material objects of a number of Africa tribes or regions, it contains enough informative text and visual references to be of interest to many collectors in this area. And it serves as a good orientation to the variety of collectible African objects and what to look for to begin to assess their desirability and value. Was this review helpful?
