A large mesa shoots from the ground, viewing the wooded camp below. There is a smaller Mesa next to it making it possible for the leader to reach the top, like stairs. Here the clan will gather for meetings and ceremonies.

Kid Collins, a violent escapee from a mental asylum, crosses paths with a verbally-abusive alcoholic widow and a crooked ex-cop who are planning a kidnapping. Are the others planning to double cross him, or is Collins just descending into paranoia? Although the noir plot can stand on its own, the main attraction is the twisted characters, most of who suffer from alcoholism or mental defect 'both of which plagued Thompson as well'. Unexpectedly, Thompson's characters often select the higher moral choice -- as if to prove that no one is all bad -- although the consequence is generally as tragic as it is redemptive. After Dark, My Sweet is a classic of the hardboiled genre.
