Overview

A "smoking hot"* erotic romance novel that will have you up all night...

Erin Coffey has been a nurse for years, but nothing’s prepared her for the physical and emotional demands of her new position. Needing to move closer to her dysfunctional family, she takes a dangerous job at Larkhaven Psychiatric Hospital, where she quickly learns that she needs protection—and she meets the strong, over-confident coworker who’s more than willing to provide it.

Kelly Robak is the type of guy that Erin has sworn she’d never get involved with. She’s seen firsthand, via her mess of a sister, what chaos guys like him can bring into a woman’s life. But she finds herself drawn to him anyway, even when he shows up at her door, not eager to take no for an answer.

What Erin finds even more shocking than Kelly’s indecent proposal is how much she enjoys submitting to his every command. But he can’t play the tough guy indefinitely. If they want to have more than just an affair, both will have to open up and reveal what they truly need.

“The sweet, smoking hot, standout erotic romance you’ve been craving.”—*New York Times bestselling author Beth Kery

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Starting a new job to be close to her reckless sister, Erin Coffey is the newest licensed practical nurse at Larkhaven’s psychiatric ward, the mental illness unit of a Michigan hospital. Among the staff is orderly Kelly Robak, a hulking muscle of a man whose brute strength coupled with persistent calm keep the staff and patients safe. Kelly is interested in Erin, but she is leery to start a relationship with a coworker, especially when she learns that what is on the table is not a relationship at all but a few days of mind-blowing sex. And what Kelly desires requires his having all the control while Erin becomes his submissive. Erin has had a preview of what’s in store but has always played it safe. She may be able to give up control for a weekend but worries about what it will cost her heart in the long run.

Verdict Since the Fifty Shades phenomenon, there has been an abundance of substandard erotica diluting the genre, but McKenna’s (Exposure) After Hours stands out for its depth of characterization. The complexities, story line, and pulsating heat will keep readers immersed.—Kara Kohn, Plainfield P.L. Dist., IL

Meet the Author

Before becoming a purveyor of smart erotic romance, Cara McKenna worked as a lousy barista, a decent designer, and an over-enthusiastic penguin handler. She loves writing sexy, character-driven stories about strong-willed men and women who keep each other on their toes…and bring one another to their knees.

Cara now writes full-time and lives north of Boston with her bearded husband. When she’s not trapped in her own head, she can usually be found in the kitchen, the coffee shop, or jogging around the nearest duck-filled pond.

    Brilliant....

I read... a lot... and it's rare that I find myself so enraptured by an author as I was after I finished this book... The story was familar... but there were no billionaires ... not even a millionaire or two... it was real... everyday people in a world we can all recognize... But it was the author's ability to use such descriptive words... to paint such a brilliant picture.. as dark as it was... absolutely brilliant... astonishing... I'm almost afraid to read something else... afraid that it won't be as good... strike the same cords.... but this book... this book was amazing.. honest... truthful... dark... and beautiful.. descriptive..

    Hot and Believable

This was an atypical adult romance with an alpha male. Yet, without the predictable rich 27 year old billionaire courting the almost virginal innocent. It had real characters with real lives and working thru believable issues to connect physically and emotionally with a partner. I love that the female lead is a hard working nurse. Highly recommend this book, you will not be disappointed.

    Fantastic

I read a lot of romance books but few got me as deep as this. There are no billionaires, misteries or some unrelatable characters here. The book and the characters are as mundane as our own lifes, yet there is something truly special about how these two come together. It is the real stuff. Simple and complex, and breathtakingly beautiful. This is one terrific writer and a book that is worth getting lost in!

Another outstanding story from Cara McKenna! Her books always leave me wanting more. I laugh out loud at the wit and humor she sprinkles in. Readers can easily relate to the characters. And of course, the sex scenes are scorching! Cara has another book - Willing Victim - that is as good as this one.

Suited for those who like a skillfully written romance that goes beyond the sex and enters the psyche, AFTER HOURS shows just how true love can heal all. ~ Under the Covers

When I found out that Cara McKenna was releasing another book, I squealed with excitement! McKenna is one of those authors whose work I immediately buy without even reading the blurb. I adore her writing and she is one my short list of favorite erotic authors.

In AFTER HOURS, McKenna does what she does best, creating an unlikely couple in Erin Coffey and Kelly Robak. Erin is nurse who recently gets a new position at the Larkhaven Psychiatric Hospital. It’s a dangerous job and McKenna explores this as she gets into a lot of detail surrounding psychology and its patients. I could tell a lot of research went into this book and since Psychology is my field of study, it played right into my interests.

You wouldn’t think a psychiatric hospital would be an ideal place to meet the love of your life, but that is exactly where Erin meets Kelly, an experienced and confident co-worker. Their romance isn’t exactly the trail-blazing kind, yes it’s hot and passionate but McKenna approaches it with light feet. Problems, both the emotional and physical kind, act as a barrier between them and McKenna takes her time in building the romance from the ground up. I have to appreciate that kind of patience and tenacity from a very skilled writer.

Another thing McKenna is great at is her sex scenes. She adds a certain vulnerability to her scenes that make them more than just sheet scorchers. They mimic real life and aren’t always the ideal fantasy. She evokes emotion that paves the way to an amazing romance. I loved the power play between Kelly and Erin and the way Erin drew herself outside of her shell. It really was a romance that made their lives better.

Suited for those who like a skillfully written romance that goes beyond the sex and enters the psyche, AFTER HOURS shows just how true love can heal all.

Complex characters and believable situations. I love when I learn a little something along the way. In this case, Erin and Kelly are co-workers in a mental health hospital, and that aspect of the story is written with compassion and understanding. It isn't a typical setting for an erotic novel, but don't let that scare you away. Kelly is one of my favorite alpha guy characters: physically huge, controlling, but compassionate and mature. I love how the relationship with Erin developes. Some really hot hot scenes add to the overall excellence of this book.

    Pass.

Too much narrative! Too much description! Verbose, vapid, in the middle of sex this woman (Erin) was carrying on in depth thoughts about all kinds of things; yet the sex was "so good!" It killed the mood for me! Jeez! There was so much dull filler in this book it took days to get through and even then, I skipped through most just to get it over with. And the ending! Ugh, not worth it!

    S.A.K.
