"It is a book that does not invite comparisons. . . . Its excellence is individual, intrinsic; it measures itself against itself."--Saturday Review of Literature

When I got back from being on tour with the smalls I was at the Trident Bookstore in Halifax, N.S. I said I was looking for a female Salinger and the old guy behind the counter looked at me like I had a hole in my head but this young nervous guy came from behind the book counter and handed me this battered book. I read it in my parents house in the Annapolis Valley cover to cover and I froze in my old room while I became obsessed with the life story of this forgotten woman. Jean Rhys won a great British prize for a book she published when she was nearly dead - The Wide Sargosso Sea. When asked about the fame she said, scathingly. 'It has come too late.'Also consider 'Judith Hearne' by Brian Moore.
