Overview

For romantic-suspense junkies and fans of Nora Roberts and Karen Robards, bestselling author Kathy Clark kicks off her Austin Heroes series with a pulse-pounding tale of two wounded souls tempted by a dangerous proposition: new love.

DEA agent Nick Archer puts his life on the line every day. A former Marine, he fears nothing . . . except commitment. Nick has no trouble finding women eager to warm his bed, and no problem sending them on their way the morning after. Relationships don’t mix with risky careers, a fact Nick learned the hard way after his marriage fell apart. He’d go it alone if it weren’t for his new K-9 partner—and the stunning trainer who makes Nick sit up and take notice.

Just like her service dogs, Jamie Chambers knows how to sniff out trouble. From the moment Nick swaggers into her kennel, she knows he’s heartbreak waiting to happen, and he wastes no time getting under her skin. Hell, he doesn’t even like dogs. As a cop’s widow, Jamie has felt the sting of loss in the line of duty, yet she recognizes something of her own pain in Nick’s smoldering gaze. Jamie knows there are no guarantees in life. But a moment of pleasure, however fleeting, holds the promise of forever—and for that, Jamie’s willing to take the plunge.

Praise for After Love

“Fast-paced, riveting . . . Playful dialogue between Nick and Jamie certainly kept me entertained, and I loved every moment they were together as their banter increased the sexual tension between them. . . . [The author] did justice to their instant and intense chemistry. . . . I would recommend After Love by Kathy Clark if you love romantic suspense, or are a fan of Nora Roberts or Karen Robards.”—Harlequin Junkie

“A sexy adventure between two damaged hearts . . . Nick and Jamie’s attraction was instantly palpable.”—TJ Loves to Read

“A fresh approach to . . . romantic suspense.”—Books and Spoons

After Love is the story of a man, a woman and a dog. The story centers on DEA agent Nick, dog trainer Jamie, and Harley the working dog looking for a new master. Both Nick and Jamie are currently single and not looking for romance. Nick is divorced, with twin boys and Jamie was widowed 3 years ago when her cop husband was killed. Nick needs to stay out the spotlight for a while and has been assigned to try and get a k-9 partner from Jamie's training facility. Harley chooses Nick and a beautiful partnership is born. Jamie begins training both man and dog and is drawn to Nick as a way of satisfying her needs. Will Nick be able discover the drug dealer who is killing students on the local college campus? This is a good romantic suspense novel that does an excellent job creating a realistic story with interesting characters and a dog that stole my heart! I was given a free copy for honest review.

*ARC received from Random House Publishing in return for an honest review* Jamie is the widow of a police officer killed in the line of duty who trains service dogs and Nick is a divorced father of twins who's marriage ended badly. He's also a DEA agent who has been ordered by his boss to get a service dog. There's a mutual attraction from the moment they meet and when Jamie offers a no strings sexual relationship, Nick gladly accepts, but neither of them can keep their emotions from getting involved. Nick is also working on a drug case that has resulted in the deaths of some college students which results in some harrowing moments in the book. That story plays out side by side with the romance in this richly written tale. There's humor, suspense, romance and a wonderful hero dog named Harley. I really liked the author's writing style. This book is a great read.

Nick Archer doesn’t play well with others. When his status as DEA agent is threaten by his action, Nick is given a choice take on a partner or be gone. The clincher, it is not your average partner his boss wants him to take on but a K-9. Jamie Chambers is a K-9 specialist. When Nick meets Jamie he isn’t minding spending some training time with her. But the more he gets to know her the harder is it for her to stay behind the line Nick will never cross, the line to having a real relationship with a woman besides something to warm his bed. I found After Love to be a good romantic suspense but the story took an unusual pace lessening my overall connection to the character’s plight. In the end, it was entertaining and found it suspenseful. 3.5 stars. I received this ARC copy of After Love from Random House Publishing Group - Loveswept in exchange for a honest review.

If you love dogs and sassy marijuana smoking grandma you will like this one. Nate is an ex-Marine turned DEA agent, who seems to find himself in trouble a lot. His boss has had it with him and thinks it’s time for a new partner. One, who is loyal, obeys your every command and will follow you anywhere. A new partner in the form of a dog, named Harley. Jamie is the owner and head trainer at the Woof Gang Kennels. Although it was a little hard to warm up to them at first, Nick and Jamie made a good couple. They both had their trust issues because of past relationships. It did get a little annoying at times when Jamie would push him away, pull him back in, push him away, and pull him back in. I was really going to have a fit at the ending but the author redeemed herself. Harley was the star of the story. I love you got to “hear” Harley’s thoughts. That was a different take on storyline I had not seen before. While it took a little bit of time to get into the book, overall this wan an ok read. Look forward to maybe reading about Nick’s brothers?

3 stars Overall After Love was a good read. The storyline had me turning the pages but I felt something was missing, I didn't feel the love between Jamie and Nick and while both were likable people I wasn't swept away with them either =/ What I did enjoy were the scenes with Nick's Grammy/Grandmother, she was a hoot! She truly made this book so much more enjoyable for me. I also loved Harley Nick's K9 partner, he was adorable and totally loved Nick. They had a wonderful relationship and you couldn't help but love seeing them together. After Love was a good start to the Austin Heroes series, looking forward to reading the next book.

Harley completely steals the scene, and the story, what a beautiful, loyal, sweetheart of a service dog! Either was it the service dogs, or a truckload of puppies, the canine world is front and center of the story, and are just adorable. The story has a fresh approach to the romantic suspense stories. A lot of focus in on the 'free time', the behind the scenes, what happens when the law enforcement is not on working on the case. Nick is broken, weary, from his demanding job, tired of the hurt of his failed marriage. He is reluctant to take on a new partner, even if he is a dog, but Harley earns his new status fast. Jamie is broken as well, widow of a cop at a young age, taking care of her wounded brother, the kennel, she fills her days, but the nights are cold and lonely. The characters are edgy, on the darker side, and Jamie is so afraid of her the new feelings inside of her, she does the pull push action, several times, until Nick is sure there's no chance for them at all. The supporting cast and crew in the story are on the prominent place, they are well developed characters, and give much to the story, new levels, and layers of depth. If you are against a constant casual alcohol consumption and a joint every now and then, maybe this book isn't for you. The relationship between Nick and Jamie is fragile, it was interesting to see Nick's development and growth through the tale, and reach the place of peace and understanding within himself and his feelings towards Jamie. If this wouldn't be the book one in the new series, I would have loved to see an epilogue, to give more believability to the end, but I hope in the future books, there's some insights into Nick and Jamie's life as well. The suspense was little on the side of the story, taking a second place in the character development and the progress of the new relationship. The story was solid, Harvey stands out, and even though the book is part of the series easy to be read as a standalone novel. ~ Three Spoons and a teaspoon on the side

I have read several books by Kathy Clark. They were all the books in her Denver Heroes series where she focuses on three brothers in Denver; a fireman, policeman, and a paramedic. After Love is the beginning of her Austin Heroes series which focuses on one of three brothers in Austin. His name is Nick Archer and he is a lone wolf DEA agent that clears a lot of cases but tends to bend the rules and get himself into a little bit of trouble on occasion. When he thinks that he overhears two young guys about to make a drug heist while he is in a bar, what happens next gets him saddled with a four-legged partner. While Nick reluctantly accepts his fate, he also meets a beautiful young woman named Jamie Chambers who owns and trains police dogs. Jamie comes with her own baggage because her husband was a cop who died in the line of duty a few years ago. Jamie believes that her husband was the only love that she deserves but Nick immediately gets her hormones in an uproar. Consequently, she decides to make him her personal sex toy with no plans for an emotional relationship. As she trains Nick on how to handle his new drug sniffing partner, Harley, Jamie and Nick try to hide their growing feelings for each other. In addition, Nick has to pose as a college student in order to find out who is peddling a dangerous new drug on a college campus. Although it’s a romantic suspense, the book has some very funny moments. Nick has a hippie grandmother who openly smokes pot and doles out advice. She is a sweetheart and the sole matriarch since Nick’s parents died several years ago. The irony of her grandsons all being in law enforcement isn’t lost on her, she just doesn’t care. Nick’s new partner, Harley is a perfect fit for him and quickly becomes Nick’s best friend. I really felt like part of the family as I read After Love. It’s not all rainbows and sunshine though. Nick and Harley are put in grave danger and must fight for their lives. It’s always a pleasure to read a book as well-balanced as this one. I look forward to the next book in the series. **Received a copy from Random House ~ Loveswept in exchange for an honest unbiased opinion.**

I loved this the author gives a little action, pull and tug of love, humor, family, about the arm force, DEA a few hot men and a few twists what else could you ask for. Nick is a love them and leave them kind of man who sure doesn’t like it when the shoe is on the other foot. After a nasty divorce he isn’t about to put his heart on the line again that is until he meets one hot dog trainer Jamie. He just might find he is the one being trained, run for the hill Nick before she and her dog gets a hold of you. Poor Nick can’t seem to get a break or do anything right. He doesn’t need a women or a partner. That is until his boss said enough and decides to bring Nick in line with a K-9 dog. Nick is a tough bad boy who doesn’t take any crap. He believes in upholding the law and getting his man any way he can. This sometimes gets him in a mess. I really liked Nick he is strong and not much gets him down. He has a smart mouth and attitude. You are just going to love his Grammy she is a doll and makes him roll his eyes more than once. A true 60’s flower child you are in for such a treat between her and Harley. Jamie is a lovely lady who has a lot on her mind and on her hands. She is trying to run a business and help her brother deal with coming home from the war. Her k-9s help many people for many different reasons. She has known the worse pain and doesn’t want to live it again. Nick just pulls her in maybe just maybe they can work together and have a little fun playing between the sheets. I loved the chemistry between Nick and Jamie, Harley is a doll who will grab your heart and take it away. I love the chemistry between Nick and Harley both feeling each other out and working together. Harley is a very smart dog with a wonderful personality and I even see a sense of humor in him. The author gives you some great supporting characters also with a sense of humor to keep you laughing. A few characters you get to know a little about and I feel sure they will be in the next few books in this series. I loved the first part and the ending. The middle in places was great and other places a little slow. All in all this was very much a page turner for me. I had to find out what other mess these two would get into. They kept me laughing and even a few places where my heart just about stopped. I am so looking forward to reading the rest of this series. I felt the author gave a wonderful story which reaches out and pulls you in. I enjoyed her writing style, the conflict she brings to it and the characters as well as the heartache, love and laughter.

An undercover DEA agent Nick who has accidentally arrest a congressmans son and has to get a drug sniffing dog for a partner. There is a new cigarette laced with a drug that has killed several students. Jamie is the owner and trainer of Woof Gang. She is a cops widow and wants nothing to do with another cop. But she wants sex so she suggests a friends with benefits. Until she starts to fall for him and then she pushes him away. When him and Harley, the dog, are injured she realizes she'd rather have days, weeks, months, or years than not at all. It is told mostly in Nick's pov. A couple in the dog Harley's, which would get a little confusing and a little of Jamie's pov. Great story with some steamy sex and second chance at love. *RECEIVED A COPY FROM NETGALLEY*

I received this book in exchange for an honest review. After Love by Kathy Clark is Book 1 of the Austin Heroes Series. I loved the premise and was really looking forward to reading this book. Initially, the pace moves along decently and then out of the blue it changes and the story becomes more hurried. Nick and Jaime were alright but I wasn’t totally feeling them as a couple. However, I did enjoy Nick catching feelings before Jaime did; that was a nice touch. Jaime on the other hand blew way too hot-n-cold for my taste. Now dare I mention the fact that considering the times we are in, I was completely put off by the fact that these two, who are basically strangers, did not once have a discussion of protection or even use it? Ehhhh, come on now! Grammy, Grammy, Grammy...she was a wicked funny and I found her antics a blast. Nick and his brothers have their hands full with her. Harley, Nick’s K9 partner, is another one who stole the show...adored him. Overall, I wasn’t feeling the story the way I should have; not at all what I had expected of this book.

Jamie Chambers is the widow of a police office who was killed in the line of duty and now runs Woof Gang Kennels. Nick Archer is an undercover DEA agent who has had a string of bad luck and in need of a partner and his boss decides his partner is going to be a canine and sends him to Woof Gang Kennels to get one. What follows is a touching story of 2 wounded souls who both need healing, a marijuana-smoking grandma who raised her 3 grandsons who all are law officers (DEA, Homeland, and Texas Ranger) and Harley the shepherd who stole "the show." I cannot wait for more in this series! **Received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

An entertaining fun read with a bit of suspense. DEA Agent Nick Archer has a new partner. One of the K-9 persuasion. Before they can get to work they both need a little training though. Nick doesn't think training with Jamie Chambers will be too bad. Nope, not bad at all. It's a shame she doesn't want anything to do with a relationship and definitely not one with a cop. Her husband was killed in the line of duty and she won't go there again. Can Nick stay focused on his case to get the drugs that are killing students off the street or will Jamie be too much of a distraction??? I would recommend this one.
