After Mozart

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Andrew Farach-Colton
Centuries after his death, Mozart continues to exert a powerful influence on musicians. In this ingenious program, violinist Gidon Kremer intersperses contemporary works inspired by Mozart with some of the master's best-known compositions. Alexander Raskatov's 5 min. aus dem Leben von W.A.M. 5 Minutes from the Life of W.A.M. begins with magical-sounding chimes that usher in a violin melody of true Mozartean grace. Accompanied softly by pizzicato strings, this odd little piece has a fragile, poignant atmosphere. Valentin Silvestrov's The Messenger is even quieter, with the synthesized sound of wind obscuring slivers of beautiful but elusive melody. In Moz-Art à ...

Alexander Raskatov's 5 min. aus dem Leben von W.A.M. 5 Minutes from the Life of W.A.M. begins with magical-sounding chimes that usher in a violin melody of true Mozartean grace. Valentin Silvestrov's The Messenger is even quieter, with the synthesized sound of wind obscuring slivers of beautiful but elusive melody. In Moz-Art à la Haydn, Alfred Schnittke uses the surviving violin part of an otherwise lost Mozart work as the basis for a thoroughly post-modern musical invention. Kremer and his orchestra play each work with sharp-edged wit and considerable warmth, proceeding similarly in Mozart's Eine kleine Nachtmusik and Serenata Notturna. In the latter, the musicians interpolate a cadenza of raucous, 21st-century spirit. The disc closes with a little charmer by Mozart's father Leopold, often called the "Toy" Symphony. Here electronic sounds replace Leopold's whimsical toy instruments -- a clever ploy that fits the humor of the piece as well as the spirit of our times.
