Overview

"Nobody thrills like Nicholson does. Nobody." - J.A. Konrath, Origin

The first book in the AFTER post-apocalyptic thriller series from an international bestselling author.

AFTER: THE SHOCK

A massive solar storm erases the world's technological infrastructure and kills billions. While the remaining humans are struggling to adapt and survive, they notice that some among them have...changed.

Rachel Wheeler finds herself alone in the city, where violent survivors known as "Zapheads" roam the streets, killing and destroying. Her only hope is to reach the mountains, where her grandfather, a legendary survivalist, established a compound in preparation for Doomsday.

Other survivors are fleeing the city, but Zapheads aren't the only danger. Rogue bands of military soldiers want to impose their own order in the crumbling ruins of civilization. When Rachel discovers a 10-year-old boy, she vows to care for him even if it means her own chances of escaping are lower.

And the Zapheads that were once simple to evade are evolving, developing communal skills even as they lay waste to the society they will eventually replace.

    It could happen

Scott has done it again. It's pretty much known what can/will happen when a massive solar flare/storm hits, at least electronically. But what about the rest? In this first of a series, we find a LOT of bodies, but some survivors, as well. But what KIND of survivors? You have to read the book. You will be on the edge of your chair, and when you finish, you will be wanting the rest of the story.

If you've never read any of Scott Nicholson's books, this is a great place to start. He brings the characters to life with words & makes the feel like they are part of the story. This is actually where I got hooked on this author. His writing style is superb! I actually cried when the story ended because I wanted to know more about the characters & what was happening to them.

I love a good...doesn't even have to be great...dystopian book. This one was so ridiculous I don't know where to begin. The plot was terrible, the characters reacted in unbelievable ways in situations that made no sense, the "zapheads" who were the affected made me laugh every time the name was used. The plot dragged and was predictable. The characters, and there are multitudes of them, I felt like killing off myself just so the book would end. Save yourself some time and a headache and try another book. Jp

    Didn't care for it.

Early on the Mexican laborer character has no idea what has occurred. Later he has some science background and despite his early confusion he now refers to the problem as the sun sickness. That was annoying..later we get foreshadowing that knly the religous understand the zombie like characters. I found the attempt at mystery clumsy.

    Nice read

It was a doomsday book with nicely done plot and character development. I would have liked it to start with the solar flare but still it had details of the event slightly touched on .

Very enjoyable but where is the sequel?

If you like doom books this is good from the aspect of the non-Prepper. Looking forward to the next book in the series.
