After winning raves for Take the Fall (“crackling with tension, intrigue, and romance”—Katy Evans) and When We Fall (“sexy, emotional, heartfelt”—Monica Murphy), Marquita Valentine ratchets up the tension as new beginnings lead to undeniable passion.
A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.
Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

Thanks to Random House Publishing Group-Loveswept via Netgalley for a copy of this book! This is book 3 in this series. Each one of these books had me captivated from the beginning! Evangeline escaped her abusive marriage and is off the market with the opposite sex. Apparently she is a magnet for the wrong kind of man. So, that became a problem when she met her sexy as all get out alpha cop neighbor! She can't stop thinking of him, but can she trust what she's feeling for him? Hunter is a cop with a past that he'd like for it to stay just that...in the past. He meets his neighbor and wants her....bad. There's nothing like a sexy, alpha cop book and lots of great copulation!! Looking forward to reading more by Marquita Valentine!

After We Fall by Marquita Valentine. I was so looking forward to reading this book and I was not disappointed. These characters are well written and the story is emotional and deep. Marquita great job. Thank you. Evangeline Ambrose survived the worse day of her life in her husbands hands. She wants to make a life for herself without any men in it, she can't trust them. When her new neighbor turns out to be her rescuer can she trust him? Hunter Sloan has seen Evangeline in six months but she still haunts him. When she turns out to be his new neighbor he will do what ever it takes for her to trust him. Can their new relationship survive her soon to be ex-husband or Hunter's secret? I received this book from the publisher for an honest review.

Hunter and Evangeline were introduced in the previous book in this series but you do not need to read that book in order to read this one. Hunter is a police officer and also a survivor of abuse, both his and his mother's, at the hands of his father. Evangeline was abused and nearly killed by her husband before she finally left him. Now she has moved into the apartment across from Hunter. After six months since he first found her on the side of the road Hunter has not been able to forget Evangeline and now she is his neighbor. We are treated to a weaving of a slow healing and learning to trust. Healing is needed for both and it was a pleasure to watch Hunter and Eva learn their way and to grow together. **Received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review**

4.5 Stars This is book three in the Take the Fall series and it stars Hunter and Evangeline. Hunter used to live in Forrestville when he was a boy. After many years he's back and is now a police officer. He's actually one of the officers that found Evangeline walking down the beltway, beaten and bloody. It's been six months and he can't stop thinking about her. It's pure coincidence that they end up living across the hall from each other. Another great story! I think I'm in love with Hunter Sloan. Really! He's amazing in bed and out of it. He knows what she's been through and handles her with the care only a good man would do. This story is about two people trying to deal with their separate abusive pasts. The characters are well developed and real. Bravo Marquita Valentine, I'm hooked! I can't wait for the next book. Received a copy via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. I was not compensated for my review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinion expressed is my own.

If you are looking for the perfect book boyfriend, look no further than Hunter Sloan. Thanks to his past he’s caring and understanding but also strong. He shows an amazing amount of sensitivity to Evangeline and what she’s been through - going slow and wooing her, letting her set the pace but making sure that she knows that he’s there waiting for her. He’s protective, funny and sexy as all get out. Evangeline has had a rough few years, thanks to an abusive relationship. And she still finds it hard to let that go and trust others, even therapists. She needs to address it, not ignore it, and Hunter does everything he can to help make that happen. She still has to be the one to heal herself but he’s there to support her every step of the way. If you’ve read the other books in this series (and apparently there is another series that involves Evangeline’s siblings, but I haven’t read it) then you know what you are going to get. It’s sexy and gritty and so addictive to read. I’ve already seen what’s coming in the next book and I CANNOT wait to get my hands on a copy – get those two together and let’s watch the sparks fly :) (Complimentary copy provided in exchange for an honest review)

After We Fall is the third book in the Take the Fall series and can be read as stand alone novel. Hunter a cop who has dedicated his life to helping others (after a rough childhood) meets Evangeline on the night she finally leaves her abusive husband. Fast forward and he still has not been able to get her out of his mind. They end of being neighbors and Hunter shows Evangeline it is ok to trust and eventually fall in love again. I am looking forward to the next book in the series and hope their neighbor Sawyer is featured in that one or an upcoming one.

Hunter Sloan and Evangeline Ambrose both know something about domestic abuse. She survived it with her ex-husband and he with his father. Hunter is the cop who found her the night she finally left her husband and although she is not the only woman he has helped in this situation, she's the one he can't forget. When their paths cross again, he's determined to prove himself to her. Evangeline can't believe that she lived the way she did for so long and when she realizes Hunter is the neighbor across the hall from her new apartment, she's angry and embarrassed, but the more time she spends with him, the easier she finds it to open up and learn to trust and love again. This is a beautiful and touching romance and I loved it. I was provided with a copy of this book by the publisher in return for an honest review.

I was not a big fan of this author in the past but this book changed my previous conclusion. It was a great story, the back plot although difficult was well handled. The characters were developed, the sub set of characters were also well written. The epilogue was lovely.

A sweet, loving story, with deep issues, and a second chance in love, that made me swoon. I admire how the difficult and delicate matter of spousal abuse was dealt with in this story. It is raw, real, yet handled with respect and dignity towards the survivors. It is taken seriously, but not made the main focus of the tale. Hunter, it is impossible not to fall in love with this courageous, brave, loyal, protective, sexy, sweet, animal loving man, who would do anything and everything for the woman he loves. He takes all the points home, all the way, every time. I think him and Evangeline are just perfect together. She is a true survivor, her bravery, maturity, and spunk left me in awe. She fights back her demons, is willing to face her future, and to make the most of it, not afraid of her past, the shadows of it still lurking around. They are hot, fun, and loving together, I like how there's no unnecessary, excess drama or angst. They have their problems to deal with, but they do just that, they talk, they find solutions, and they move on. I am not a fan of the first person point of view, in this tale, it is used by both the hero and heroine, and towards the end, I didn't even pay that much attention to it anymore. A beautiful love story, heroic at times, of finding your way again in life, starting anew, learning to trust, and love, and make the most of life, as it is happening to you. ~ Four Spoons with a teaspoon on the side

Evangeline & Hunter have both been through so much in their lives. Evangeline having escaped and trying to get a fresh start. Hunter could have turned out like his father, but went the opposite direction. Their lives collide...could it be fate? Marquita Valentine's message in this book and the book itself is absolutely incredible!

This new release takes a hard look at domestic violence which can be a little difficult subject for some. However the author is able to craft enlightening and positive story that will soon not be forgotten. You can't help but cheer on these two characters they work towards the delicate balance of trust and love. Perfectly crafted for each other, the attraction blooms quickly and yet hesitantly. It is a delicate balance that the author manages to capture perfectly. With a few spots of angst and trouble, the HEA comes as no surprise yet it is a welcoming feeling. The story is loaded with good vibes, plenty of passion and fire, and a lovely ending you have to love. I am a huge fan of this author and enjoyed the beautiful craftsmanship she managed to capture with this delicate storyline. Worth the read for a feel good story! * I was gifted a copy for review purposes

4.5 star The story has laughs, pain, secrets, fear, and heartbreak. I was pulled right into this story. If you have not read the below I would recommend reading those books(s) first Take the Fall (Take the Fall, #1) When We Fall (Take the Fall #2) This is Evangeline and Hunter’s story. Hunter wanted Evangeline even when she was broken. Now he can’t get her out of his head. Months later she is moving next door to him. When Evangeline realizes that Hunter lives next store she is surprised. The chemistry is off the charts. They are getting close and she is starting to trust but Hunter is hiding a secret. Will she be able to deal with the secret? Can she trust him after she learns the secret? Will he protect her is her past comes back to haunt her? Can she trust him? Will they be able to deal with her past but also grow as a couple after the secrets are all out? I felt I was able to connect with the characters and the story was a great read. I highly recommend this book.

This is a pretty emotional read about friendship, about self-discovery, about second chance in life. I had a glimpse of Evangeline in an earlier book and my heart had gone out to her. Hunter was already a sweetheart then but he's an even better person after reading this book. And my heart hurt knowing the past he had though that past had shaped him to be the man he is. Some may feel the story is slow but it is well paced in my opinion. Hunter's patience and understanding were such great support to Evangeline as she begins her new life. I loved her friendship with Saylor too. It's definitely not an easy process for her to come out of her shell and I admire her strength and her perseverance. Both characters are really likeable and I enjoyed their interaction or the quiet moments of them just being with each other. An enjoyable read that left me with a happy and hopeful feel. I loved this story by Marquita Valentine! It is the third book in this series and I believe it is the best story in this wonderful series. Hunter and Evangeline met under horrific circumstances, but each made a lasting impression on the other, but seeing each other again after all of these months brings up difficult memories for both of them. In spite of that they are finding it difficult to hide their growing attraction towards one another or if they could would they really want to? I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next book in this series. I was given an ARC for an honest review. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

My Review: These characters were introduced in the last book in this series, and I'll be honest, I wasn't sure I would like their story. Evangeline's back-story is not an easy one, and while I like emotion-filled stories, depressing doesn't work for me at all. Thankfully, this was not that book. While her story absolutely is heartbreaking, it's also inspiring because she overcomes and works through the trauma even when it would be so easy to let her hold back. Hunter and Evangeline met when he was on the job as a cop. He found her beaten to within an inch of her life by her husband and wandering along the highway. It's a night she doesn't want to remember. It's one he can't forget. Even though he's helped tons of domestic abuse victims during the course of his career, he can't forget Evangeline. Six months later, in a twist of fate, she ends up living across the hall from her. Evangeline doesn't trust men and she sure doesn't trust her judgment of them anymore. As a result, she doesn't want to have anything to do with Hunter despite her attraction to him. Slowly things evolve as she begins to heal from her trauma. I loved Hunter's patience with Evangeline. His own childhood experiences gives him a great insight as to what she endured. I loved him so much and the fact that he always put her needs first. He's a great hero...and he fosters dogs. You can't help but fall for a hero like that. (And note...I did really like the side story with Jake. Added into Evangeline's job at the animal shelter, and I really liked that entire aspect of the story.) My only complaint...before she got married, Evangeline was a huge YouTube music star. We didn't get to see her reclaim that part of her. I could understand why she wasn't quite ready to go public again, but I wanted to see her find her passion for music again. Just one more part of herself to reclaim from her jerk of an ex. I'm ready for the next story in the book...maybe between the firefighter and the manager of the animal shelter. Sparks certainly seemed to by flying in that final scene of the book. I think I'll like them together. I'm definitely looking forward to more from this series. I received a complimentary copy of this book in return for an honest review.

A powerful story of learning to trust and find love again. The story deals with domestic abuse, which both characters have been part of. It is told in a dual point of view. I really felt for both characters, and how they learned to move on. I also fell in love with Jake. I highly recommend this story.

I was waiting on Hunter and Evangeline story because of the subject matter and how they met. I wanted her to have peace and a strong guy by her side and Hunter did not disappoint. I was however surprised by his past and second job and knew it will end them but what made them work is how much they had in common. He was her sounding board and she reigned in his hot head and self doubt. She saw the boy within turn into a man and he saw the woman she was before AE... (loved the nickname). Marquita brought this story to life and it is by far my favorite in the series so far.

Quite a gritty story which began at the end of When We Fall. Evangeline had been abused and finally ran away, badly beaten, into the arms of Hunter. This story takes place months later and Evangeline is set to begin her life anew across the hall from Hunter. He never forgot her and tried to keep his distance but they are attracted to each other. Evangeline finds love is stronger than her fear, but trust is harder to come by. I have enjoyed reading this series and recommend it.

I received an ARC from Netgalley! This was an absolutely beautiful story about two people with truly tragic backgrounds & the ways they find to deal with their pasts & learn to move forward in their lives. Hunter hasn't been able to forget the women he rescued on the side of the road all those months ago. And when she happens to move in next door he is determined to show Evangeline that not all men are like her soon to be ex-husband. But he has a secret that may ruin everything. Will his angel be able to see past it to the man he is? Evangeline isn't interested in having another man in her life. Or at least that' what she tells herself. But she soon finds that maybe there are parts of herself that are not completely uninterested in the gorgeous cop that lives next door. But can she ever open up enough to really let a man back into her life? Will she give Hunter a chance? If you are looking for a sweet read with just the right amount of spice, this is the book for you!!!

Favorite Quotes: “There’s a fire in her eyes that I would love to get burned by.” “They have more money than God and less common sense than He gave rocks.” “He’s not an impatient kisser, not at all. Hunter has a mouth made for sinning and the skills to make me want to skip dinner and go straight to dessert.” “Did I ever tell you about the time that I answered a personal ad and it turned out the guy was a professional cuddler? I had to pay him for hugging me good night.” “These are the sounds of my heart, the sounds of my future, and the sounds of my home.” “No, the woman I love means what she says. She knows how precious words are, how precious time is, and neither of us wants to waste any of it.” My Review: After We Fall felt like a departure from her norm compared to the previous Marquita Valentine books I have read – granted I have only read a handful, but this one was considerably more angsty with a pervasive sense of heaviness and emotional tension, despite also being a sweet and tender love story. Due to their histories of trauma and abuse, both major characters experienced flashbacks - with scenes that could possibly trigger other such victims - although I felt the subject was handled deftly and in a sensitive manner. The storyline was relevant, steamy, realist, highly emotive, and well paced. I adored these characters and quickly fell in love with Hunter – who is now my current BBF.

Evangeline Ambrose is ready to close the door on her past, discover a new life for herself, in a new place, and live her life on her own terms. After finally escaping the clutches of her abusive husband she is ready for some much needed peace and quiet, and the opportunity to find herself again. She needs time to heal her broken heart and spirit and has no intention of tying herself down to another man, no matter how tempting he may be... Hunter Sloan didn't grow up in the best environment, he and his mother fell prey to his abusive father and no matter how hard he tries to bury those torturous memories, they are always there lingering in the back of his mind. Choosing to become a cop and being able to help protect those who need it has always been a way for him to relieve some of his regret from his childhood and not being able to protect his mother. It has also put him in the path of a beautiful woman who needed saving from her abusive husband, and Hunter made it his mission to help her escape the abusive environment she found herself in. He wants so badly to be the one to help her heal and take away her pain, but she just isn't ready to let him in... This beautifully written story captured my attention right from the start and held me captive long after the last page was turned. Barely a page into it and I immediately felt myself being pulled into Hunter and Evangeline's world and completely entranced by every spoken word. This was my first time reading something from this author, and I have to say that her writing totally took me by surprise, and instantly made me regret not reading something by her before now... she completely won me over with this beautifully crafted story! This is definitely one of those stories that will invade your thoughts, steal the breath from your lungs, move you to tears, and linger with you long after the last page has been turned! Highly recommend it!!
