Afterglow

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
It'd be hard to imagine a more appropriate title for this elegantly wasted invocation of wee-hour remembrances. Formerly the voice behind chill-o-delic One Dove, Allison shakes loose a little more on her solo debut -- if not quite enough to get a full-fledged cardio workout. The Scottish singer occupies a space not unlike the one Beth Orton has carved out, albeit decked out with a bit more in the way of "real" instrumentation, much of it courtesy of Death in Vegas's Richard Fearless. His indigo-hued guitar lines tint Allison's graceful melodies, leaving plenty of room for both the melodies mainly soft-focus psychedelic meanderings and urbane lyrics particularly ...

The Scottish singer occupies a space not unlike the one Beth Orton has carved out, albeit decked out with a bit more in the way of "real" instrumentation, much of it courtesy of Death in Vegas's Richard Fearless. His indigo-hued guitar lines tint Allison's graceful melodies, leaving plenty of room for both the melodies mainly soft-focus psychedelic meanderings and urbane lyrics particularly legendary songsmith Hal David's "Did I Imagine You?" to shine through. For all the world-weariness that Allison exudes on songs like "In Winter Still" and "I Wanna Feel the Chill" which strips things back to just the singer and her piano, AFTERGLOW isn't merely an exercise in depressive soul-baring: It's more a languid massage of the inner spaces we too often neglect.
All Music Guide - Tom Demalon
Former One Dove frontwoman Dot Allison returns after an extended absence with her solo debut, Afterglow. She continues in the same vein as her former band, and certainly manages to live up to the high musical standards of that trip-pop act. Allison co-produced the album, and also plays guitar and keyboards and handles programming chores. Afterglow is a strong, dreamy effort that envelops the listener immediately. "Tomorrow Never Comes" is sparse and heartbreaking, while "Close Your Eyes" has a light dance feel and a radio-ready hook. "In Winter Still," with its strings and piano, could have come from a Cocteau Twins record. Allison delivers a pair of stellar pieces in the absolutely gorgeous "Did I Imagine You?" co-written with Hal David and the haunting "Message Personnel."
