Overview

Welcome to your next chance.

Chaz Dominguez is a professional Babysitter in New Orleans, helping to integrate the recently deceased into their new and improved lives. Though Fresh Start has always been the only game in town, resurrection isn't all it's cracked up to be. Nine lives are all a person can get—and a powerful group of desperate, high-level Nine-Timers will stop at nothing to possess the keys to true immortality.

Now the only hope for Chaz and his family—and the human race—lies in the secrets locked away in the mind of Angelique, the beautiful, mysterious Newbie he must protect . . .

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Chaz Dominque is not your average babysitter. His Fresh Start charges aren't cute toddlers; they're recently resurrected men and women who are learning to adjust to their new and improved existences. Unfortunately, his usually mundane job has put him in the crosshairs of desperate Nine-Timers who want to scratch their way to immortality. An urban fantasy with teeth; a mass-market paperback original.

a terrific New Orleans science fiction thriller

    Afterlife
    Merrie Destefano
    Eos, Sep 28 2010, $7.99
    ISBN: 9780061990816

In New Orleans, Chaz Domingue earns a living at Fresh Start counseling and protecting new clones while the resurrected deceased struggles to regain their equilibrium. His current "babysitting" newbie is Angelique. However, what should have been a simple job guiding Angelique turns nasty when he must keep the woman safe from an unknown adversary who wants her dead.

Chaz assumes that the culprits fear Angelique knows something from a prior life that they do not want revealed. Questioning Angelique divulges nothing; so Chaz is left on the defensive insuring the woman and consequently his own family are not harmed. However, he remains ignorant to the fact that a powerful cadre of Nine-Timers wants the Fresh Start secrets as the ninth bat at life is the acceptable normal last swing; this group plans to live forever at any cost to others.

The first Resurrection Chronicles is a terrific New Orleans science fiction thriller that rotates first person viewpoints with the prime star being Chaz, who fumbles, stumbles, and grumbles with keeping the newbie safe from those who want her dead. Fast-paced, readers will relish this dark New Orleans drama as the hero has no idea what he has stepped into by doing his job except he knows that Angelique is the cause that threatens him and his family.

    Not for me

The world story was too poorly reasoned. I still don't understand the reason for all the destruction. That plus the odd Christian bias really put me off. Near the end I was forcing myself to read, so I stoped with only a chapter or two remaining.

    Fantastic!

    ~4.5 stars~

I'll be the first to admit when I read the back cover copy for this book I wasn't sure if I would like this book. Don't get me wrong I read a ton of paranormal fiction but it's mostly full of teen angst and romance (yeah I read YA fiction). However when I learned that this book featured a dog as one of the main characters I thought, "Cool, a furry creature who isn't a werewolf!" I jumped at the chance to review this book and I was not disappointed in the least.

This book has an awesome dark, gothic setting (New Orleans) and characters so creepy it made my skin crawl. Now I've read my fair share of horror stories and have seen enough scary movies that I'm not creeped out by much but let me tell you the "bad guy" is one weird, messed up villain! He just jumps off of the page at you. This entire story is like that however, the scenery and the whole apocalyptic world seem so realistic...I guess that's another reason why I find it so frightening. My favorite not-so-creepy character is Omega, the German Shepard. He kicks butt. All I have to say is Rin Tin Tin and Lassie had better watch their backs, there's a new canine in town and he's pretty fierce!

It's very interesting to read books that are thought provoking and entertaining and ask the what if question. What if we could chose to live another life? Would you take the chance if it was available to you or would you be a One-Timer? Afterlife is just an all around great story. I was a little confused about how all the cloning and jumping stuff worked at first but as I read it became more clear to me. If I read a book with a very teeny tiny romantic angle and I still love it enough to put on my keeper shelf it must be good! If you give this book a try I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Once you open it you are hooked.

I received and ARC of this book and it was amazing!
In the first few chapters, that hanging chapters based in separate character's POV was a bit disorientating for me in the beginning. As the story developed it engulfed me into this work of a future time where people can "jump" their consciousness to a new body up to 9 times. In a car wreak and you have the expensive chip.... swoosh =new body.
It is a really interesting concept and it made an amazing story. Once you get used to the different characters having their own point of view in separate chapters that all cohesively tie into each other you are swept away into the futurist world where even the ones you love get bored and leave you for a new life, new memories, and a new body.
I read and ARC, it was amazing, and I totally recommend this book to you all
Once you pass the first 30 pages, you are hooked.
