Overview

Beautiful, headstrong Afton is taken from her parents at an early age and raised in the castle, a companion to the earl's daughter. Schooled in the ways of kings and surrounded by splendor, Afton falls in love with the earl's son, brave, Calhoun, her childhood protector.

But Calhoun's mother, the Lady Endeline, has much different plans for him than marriage to a villein's daughter. Suddenly Afton's world is torn viciously apart. She is cast out of the castle, given to a man she fears and despises as a reward for his loyalty--an all too clear reminder that, for all her dreams, she is nothing but a villein.

Now all she has left is a burning desire for vengeance . . .

While it includes some actual historical figures, this book is fiction and, therefore, history was modified to suit the melodramatic tale of the protagonist's life.

The author of Afton of Margate Castle is Angela Elwell Hunt. The genre of this book is historical/romance fiction. This is a story that takes place in medieval times. Where there is kings dueling for the throne, lords overtaxing his people, and villains working harder than a donkey but doesn't get paid. This story is about a beautiful, nine year old girl named Afton who is taken away from her mother, Corba, and her father, Wido because Wido's lamb died from eating baneberries given accidentally by Afton during a feast. When Wido tells the head steward about the death of the animal, the steward demands, for the Lady Endeline, his daughter, Afton. Lady Endeline cannot bear any more children after bearing three, so she takes Afton away from her family, and has her live with the noble family in the castle. When Afton is thirteen, she is married to the miller named, Hubert. On their wedding night, and for nights to come during their marriage, Hubert forces and abuses her to unwillingly do the 'birds and the bees' with him. The out come of those beatings results in her have twin children. On the day the children are born, she ends up having twins, which, back in those days, people thought that the wife had been unfaithful to the husband. So Hubert says that he is going to kill the second child and kill her also, which he says that he has the right to do. So she kills him at the first chance given to save her, but she thinks that she was too late to save the second baby. So she rears her son, Ambrose, into a good Christian. But since his father was mean and abusive, he turned mean and abusive. Now, Afton's first love, Calhoun, who was Enderlin's second sun, and whose love was the first reason why she was married to Hubert, was sent to Warwick to train to be a night. When he comes back, he sees an abused and widowed Afton, who pushes his love away because their love is forbidden. So he goes away to join the crusades, in which he is captured and imprisoned for twelve long years with his mentor, Fulk. When he finally escapes, he comes back to Margate Castle and finds that Afton has been falsely accused of cheating out a customer that came to grind grain. She is sentenced to do a whole year worth of hard labor, and the mill is confiscated from her ownership. She pushes him away again, saying that she cannot love the son of her enemy, for his mother had taken away her son, Ambrose, as payment for the 'thievery'. So he goes to join the battle of his king and swears loyalty to him. And then he gets a mysterious letter from his father! To find out more of this interesting book, please read it. I found it very interesting it only took me four days to read it. I give this book a full four thumbs up (counting the toes also) because I enjoyed the plot and also because it tells of a girl, turned into a woman before her due time and stays strong through the hard times.

This book made me laugh and cry. It is the first and by far the best book in the series. I truly loved reading the story and being awwed by the writer. I heard a book talk on this book a while before I read it and even then I could tell it was a really good book.
