I have thought of writing a review a number of times and then put it off as the silly idea of a dad, doting upon his youngest daughter, rather than something people would trust as an un-biased review of a cookbook. I was probably right but here goes! As all of you know, who have tracked her blog and now are experiencing her cookbook, my youngest daughter Danielle suffers from a horrible disease called Ulcerative colitis.  A few years ago I found myself in a hotel room adjacent to hers in Kampala, Uganda pleading for her life, as she lay preciously near death in the next room, in the midst of a massive flare up. She and her husband had come along on a humanitarian trip that I was leading, to work amongst the ultra poor in the IDP camps of Uganda, along the southern Sudan Border.  I was beside myself, hearing her moan in pain, through the wall, thinking I had most assuredly signed her death warrant allowing her on the trip. She was in agony and severely bleeding, in a country rampant with AIDS and at best a suspect blood supply, should she need a transfusion.  That episode was the first of many that landed her over and again in hospitals and into a world of harsh drug therapies that only made her condition worse. My wife Cindi and I have agonized at the weight of the health burdens she and her husband faced in their first years of marriage. More than most suffer in a lifetime. Rather than becoming defeated by food allergies and resigning herself to her disease,  Dani went on the defensive a few years ago and radically changed her diet. More than that she has leveraged her massive culinary skills, love for food and equal love for journalism, in an all out crusade. A crusade to not only end her own suffering, but to become a source of hope, for tens of thousands of others, suffering from food and digestive related illnesses. She truly is a local girl mounting a global war on not only Ulcerative Colitis but also many other diseases that have relegated masses of folks to resign themselves to the idea, that they will never enjoy good food again. Her refusal to buy that lie for herself has set her free, healed her and has inspired all of us in her family and community.    She has transformed her little kitchen, as she says in the book, "into a formidable command center for culinary transformation." She is inventing the most amazing recipes, of what should be taboo and decadent delights, but all clean, safe and fitting for people all over the world that suffer from digestive diseases. So I'm writing today as that silly doting dad, but also as one inspired and mesmerized by the story I have watched unfold in my little girl and in the lives the literally thousands of followers I read comments from who write in to her blog. They are consistently singing her praises for setting them free to love and enjoy food again.  I have had the privilege of being a guinea pig on most of the amazing recipes you will find in the pages of this book. They are crazy good. My favorites are her Short Ribs, awesome Sandwich Bread, her Version of my Grandma and mom's Spaghetti Sauce and of course the incredible Chocolate Chip Cookies.   As one who comes from a family that loves food and loves the magic of what transpires between loving family members as they linger for hours around the dining table, my daughter has blessed my wife and I in ways we will be touched by for a lifetime. I expected a cookbook full of great food knowing Danielle. I just never expected a cookbook that would make a grown man cry and make his buttons pop off with pride.

Some cookbooks are ok on the NOOK version. I would say this is NOT one of them. Get the real book. It's beautifully done and you will want it in your hands. I started eating "clean" real foods just over a year ago. Although I didn't have any severe health issues to overcome, I couldn't believe how much better I felt eating good food! One of the first blogs I frequented was againstallgrain. I've been anxiously awaiting Danielle's cookbook release. I pre-ordered it months ago! Now that it has arrived, I've been reading through every recipe. Some I recognize, and many are brand new. While not all of Danielle's recipes are "paleo", they sure do make cheating less offensive. I can actually find variations of many comfort foods, without the digestive issues I would trigger if I ate the old way. Her recipes are family-friendly, which is important with a family of 7. Buy it! Use it! Eat for your health!!

The Pioneer Woman of PALEO: A true love story recipe for all of us.... Simple small town girl changes the world with her testimony. Danielle Walker shows up being exactly who she is; one of US! A real girl; self taught cook and photographer, wife, mother, daughter and girlfriend who finds herself in the midst of a painful disease and through her biggest struggle delivers healing and hope for many. Inspirational in an unassuming, humble, grass roots kind of way, I find the simplicity and clear almost basic nature of the recipes so refreshing. I love that she sorts out what to use and how to use them as if you are standing next to her and the mixing bowl. She is a pioneer in showing us that our story can have meaning and with the right recipe we can change the world. We just need to go AGAINST ALL GRAIN! I am going to order one for everyone on my Christmas list; it is the great gift of delicious food, love and health all wrapped into one! LOVE THIS BOOK!

When I heard this book was coming out I couldn’t wait so when I got it I dove right in and read it from cover to cover.  One thing I really love about this book is the beautiful pictures for each recipe.  The pictures made me want to try every one of the recipes and so far I am doing quite well with that.  I have made the Curried Short Ribs with the Mashed Cauliflower which was so easy to make delivering tender and incredibly delicious ribs. My husband doesn’t like cauliflower and he ate the Mashed Cauliflower saying it was good!  Also, I have made the Slow Cooker Chicken Tacos which were so good I ate them every day for a week and had people over just to have them.  Also the Thai Pad See Ew, Turkey Club Wrap, Spaghetti Squash Boats with Mini-Meatballs, Shaved Brussels Sprouts with Bacon, Leeks, and Pomegranate Seeds just to name a few favorites, are all winners at my house.  The recipes are very easy to follow, not time consuming and the finished product is amazing in flavor as well as to the eye. I can’t wait to try more recipes from breakfast to desserts!  If you are wondering if this would be a good cookbook to buy, the answer is a big yes. I have a ton of cookbooks and this is the only one I now use simply because it’s easy to follow, and one I can trust every recipe will deliver great taste.  I hope Danielle will come out with another book because I know it will be another winner.

I have had the honor of watching (and sampling) Danielle's creation of her amazing recipes.  Her passion for creating tasty food for her limited diet requirements is inspiring.  In her desire to create delicious Paleo, grain free meals has also helped others with similar diseases enjoy food again.  I have made several of Danielle's recipes from her cookbook and website and have never been disappointed.  My family is not grain free although I do feel healthier when I eat that way, so I make the meals with grain free options.  For example, I made the Slow Cooker Orange Chicken with a side of Cauli-rice and a side of regular white rice.  My family devoured every bit of the chicken.  I also made her granny sarella's spaghetti sauce recipe.  This was the best spaghetti sauce I have ever made.  Cooking the sauce with pork chops in the bottom gives the sauce the most incredible flavor and the pork chops are so tender, they melt in your mouth.   Be sure to pick up the book or order it soon and make sure you read her story and journey.

There are plenty of paleo style cookbooks out there, and because of the food revolution taking place right now, there are more of them every day.   This one, however , is beautifully photographed, and you can just tell everything will turn out GREAT.  Sometimes you are disappointed with paleo recipes that don't live up to their descriptions.  I have already tried many of Danielle's recipes with great success, and I am so glad to have this GREAT cookbook finally. And don't even get me going with the life-changing results in the health and well-being department.  For me, it started with a 40 lb weight loss, and goes on from there.  A variety of (relatively minor, I admit) ailments (skin rashes, diarrhea/constipation, insomnia, general irritability, headaches, inability to concentrate) are cured, and my husband is enjoying his first stomach pain free life, EVER, in 65 years.  Oops, and what if we've avoided some more horrible illness that was coming down the pike?  So glad we found out that the standard american diet (S.A.D.) is poisoned, before it's too late.

When I first met Danielle, I was living in Kona and she dropped off a batch of the "Spiced Pumpkin Muffins" (see page 228). She cut them to be "sample size" but little did I know when I grabbed that delicious piece of heaven, that my life would be forever changed. I think I ended up eating all the samples in the most selfish way possible.  Danielle has a way of introducing a new style of eating with incredible ease. Her recipes are vibrant and packed with flavor, easily making each food item the "the best thing I have ever eaten" and it's always followed by an oohhh and an ahhh. This book has a picture on every page, which makes you instantly drool...making each recipe a full food experience.  My biggest fear is getting cookbooks and trying to cook a full meal...because I mess up every time. With Against All Grain, I am able to cook each meal with ease, playing a little Celine Dion while I do a little dance, because Danielle has easily made cooking fun! I have tasted a majority of these recipes and even when I attempt to make them, they come out tasting the same. I love the fact that she has chosen to take extravagant meals, and simplify them for the every day person. This cookbook is hands down, the best cookbook I have ever read and cooked from.  Some of my favorites, which I urge you to try, are: In my opinion, the best meal I have ever eaten and the one I would drop any life event for is the famous "Curried Short Ribs" (page 124) with "Mashed Cauliflower" (page 122) followed with the unbelievable "Mint-Chip Ice Cream" (page 282). "What a treat" has easily become my staple phrase when I think about every recipe in this book. Danielle, you have done it. You have easily changed the way I think about food and your story is inspirational. You are easily changing the world one recipe at a time! Congratulations!!!

After getting diagnosed with several auto immune diseases my doctor told me to follow an AI diet. I did some research and luckily I found this book. She gives some background on eating paleo, walks you through setting up your pantry and then gives many great recipes. I have loved everything I have made so far. Even my kids like the food. Everyone should get a copy.

Danielle strives to make our favorite meals healthy! They are easy, delicious and there are so many recipes. I've already bought 3 books; 2 in book form as gifts and one on my new nook. I enjoy following her on facebook as well as her blog because she shares so many great recipes, stories and tips!

I am in love with this cookbook. I have a restricted diet that, similar to Danielle, started as SCD and is becoming more like paleo. Her blog has been a life saver on my journey to health and I love having a cookbook full of her beautiful recipes that all fit my lifestyle! It's wonderful that her recipes make eating this way feel so completely satisfying and delicious! The pictures are gorgeous, the instructions are easy to follow and makes cooking feel easy (even though it's more complicated things than my limited cooking skills are used to) and I've been so pleased with the results so far. I've even made them for people who aren't paleo, to rave reviews. So glad I got this!

Beautifully presented & organized with great variety of simple to understand recipes. I was so excited to sit down to read this book ..….an hour and a half later I couldn’t put it down! I kept flipping through the pages back and forth creating meal plans in my mind of what I’d be cooking first. The pages are filled with such gorgeous pictures accompanied by recipes that are “user friendly”, easy to understand and are attainable.  I am new to the grain free way of cooking and there is so much to take in when learning a new way of life. Thankfully, Danielle’s simple elegance presented a layout of a book that was so well thought out. I enjoyed learning the specifics on paleo, specific carbohydrate, vegan & dairy free. I love how Danielle offers tips and encourages readers to follow directions to achieve best results yet also suggests that exploring in the world of cooking grain free has endless possibilities and that trial and error is ok!

I've been a huge fan of Danielle's blog for several years. Her recipes are inventive and always delicious. Her baked goods are the best. Even my non paleo friends love them! So of course I pre-ordered her cookbook when I first heard about it last year. Couldn't be happier when I finally received it in the mail! The pictures are the most beautiful of any cookbook I've ever seen! Everything is organized really well and I love that the recipe index in the back has a small picture for each recipe. I made her famous chocolate chip cookies from the book this afternoon and, like all her desserts, they were amazing! Can't wait to cook some of the main dishes this week! So many delicious looking dishes to chose from - it will be hard to decide what to try first!

Wow!!! This cookbook is a delight and will be your trusted friend in the kitchen. I was fortunate enough to receive an advanced copy a few weeks ago and it's already loved, spilled on, ear marked and sticky because I can't resist cooking from it EVERY day. I don't know how Danielle has done it, but the recipes are delicious, company worthy, yet super easy. The tips are spot on. The end result turns out as intended. I have made several and I must say that a few of the recipes should come with a warning label because they are so decadent that you will be making them over and over again: Chocolate Fudge Sauce, Real Deal Chocolate Chip Cookies, and Rosemary Bread Sticks. I've made all three multiple times in just a few short weeks, they are THAT good!!! I've also made the World Famous Sandwich Bread, Cauli-Rice, Clam Chowder, Slow Cooker Beef Chuck Chili, Chocolate Cream Pie with Chocolate-Cookie Crust, Coconut Whipped Cream, "Peanut Butter" Cookies and the Berry Basil Spritzer just since I received the book. (That's how much fun this cookbook is to use.) I've made plenty of her recipes in the past off of her lovely blog, all fully enjoyed, but this cookbook is not just a copy of the blog but full of new recipes as well. I especially appreciate the page with Danielle's resources for purchasing.  I appreciate the labeling system she created to make recipes for certain allergies easy to find. I am lactose intolerant and I love being able to identify Dairy Free items easily. Having said that, being lactose intolerant isn't the worst thing in the world but it does ruin some lovely things like Clam Chowder. Finding an alternative like Danielle's feels like a little gift from Heaven. This whole book is a gift from Heaven! These dishes are not only up to par with the traditional versions, but I prefer them OVER the traditional ones. Here's why: not only healthier, but they are cleaner to the palate, lighter on the digestion-you never feel sluggish and heavy afterward. AND so far the recipes I've made are simpler to make than the traditional counter parts. I LOVE IT! I have a teenager that resists anything I label healthy that went nutzo over the "Peanut Butter" Cookies. The only complaint you will have after preparing Danielle's dishes is they disappear too fast! Buy the book even if you don't have an allergy. Just buy it. Discover how decadent and full food tastes when made with fresh, nutrient rich ingredients. If you are a vegetarian, get the book! You will love the vegetarian recipes and sweet section. If you are sick, get the book! Danielle's story will fill you with hope and insight. And the photographs make it a perfect gift for anyone who loves to cook, wants to make healthy changes, or just loves to eat amazing food. Delightful, inspiring, and fun! This cookbook is top shelf!

I am so grateful for this cookbook!  I use to search the internet for hours looking for Paleo recipes.   After spending countless jours and too much money to throw away the poor results, I would find myself eating things that tasted terrible and feeling defeated on this long journey of eating different then most people around me.  Enter Danielle....bringing fresh baked goods for all of us to "taste test" and give our feedback.  There wasn't much feedback other than, "this is unbelievable", or "how in the world did you make it taste so good without flour and sugar???"  Once I got my hands on these recipes, I found myself shocked that I didn't have to throw the first batch away, or tweak it to make it taste good.  I can't tell you how good it feels to know you can trust something as simple as a recipe or cookbook, but it's important when you are adjusting your lifestyle to have these things just be easy.  These recipes are so good,   it makes you forget you are eating different or missing the main ingredients that most restaurants cook with.  I have found myself encountering a lot of people complaining that their doctor has put them on a gluten free diet for allergies.  Danielle's blog and this cookbook are the first things that come out of my mouth.  I watch their face slowly shift from discouragement to hope.  It's so cool that someone's hard work  in the kitchen can bring hope and healing to some many lives around them.  Hope is like fuel for a car. It's sometimes all you need to lift you up and get you moving. Thank you Danielle for the countless hours you have spent testing and creating foods for people, who either want to pursue a healthier lifestyle or have no choice because of illnesses.  I was sick and after years of pursuing natural health and eating this way, am back to normal.  Your recipes not only took away  those feelings of being deprived or that I couldn't have what other people around me eat, but it made the foods I am eating taste better than what's around me. I know this has been a labor of love for you, knowing  how you felt and not wanting other people to walk out there life feeling those things as well.  The sacrifice s you have made have brought and will continue to bring the hope that is need to conquer this journey and live a long, healthy life because you cared enough to make a difference.

As I walked through Barnes & Noble in search of a different book, I passed by the cooking section and felt drawn in by Danielle's cookbook masterpiece. The words gluten-free, dairy-free and refined sugar-free jumped out at me as I perused the beautiful pages of delicious looking food--all within the guidelines of my restrictive diet. Hungry, underweight and surrounded by a plethora of food options that looked and smelled delicious, but would have me suffering later, I contemplated eating the book. Instead I shed a few tears of joy and hugged the book of deliciousness for the hope that it gave me. (Yes, I seriously did this!) I then went home and bought the book on the B&N website, along with the almond and coconut flours from the Honeyville site. I have since made the Sandwich Bread and Spiced Pumpkin Muffins and have overindulged in each because the texture and flavor are amazingly traditional; I believe I will be resurrecting my holiday baking tradition this year. Tonight I am trying the pan-seared salmon. Thank you, thank you, thank you, Danielle, for making eating pleasurable again! Best Wishes, happyclark

I chose this cookbook over a few others because I was just delving into the grain-free lifestyle, and many of them seemed overwhelming, and not very welcoming. Danielle Walker has done a great job introducing this method of cooking, with lots of tips on purchasing ingredients, cooking methods, etc. I have made many things out of the cookbook over the past month or so, and have not had a single fail. Every recipe I've tried has been a do-over!

Wow, this is an amazing cookbook. Very creative yet practical and not intimidating. I had the pleasure of meeting Danielle in Denver at her book signing this past weekend too. I appreciated that her son, husband and family were there as well, thank you for supporting her! I have really enjoyed realizing that cashews are a great flour instead of always using almond and coconut flours to lighten and enrich flavor. My favorite recipes are shaved brussel sprouts with bacon, leeks and pomegranates, sesame orange chicken, world famous sandwich bread and Greek gyro pasta with lamb meatballs. The best thing about this cookbook is that Danielle has incorporated familiar foods and dishes creatively re-inventing them with wholesome healthy ingredient choices in a simple format. I would highly recommend this book. - JennyK, Colorado

This cook book is amazing! I've only tried a handful of recipes but they were easy to make and so delicious. The Thai Pad with carrot noodles was shockingly good and I couldn't believe it was grain-free! Best cook book for healthy eaters.

I got my hands on this book just last week. I have made a few of the recipes already and love how yummy they are. Not only is the taste AWESOME... the book is so user friendly. It had a picture for each recipe, which really helps me visualize what the finished product looks like should actually look like. There is a section in the back of the book for themed meals i.e. Thai night, BBQ, Game day, etc. I am not advanced when it comes to working my way around the kitchen, so this book made me feel like a rockstar.
