As much of the world suffers unspeakable misery and the Third-Worldization of the United States accelerates, civil society is impoverished by policies that benefit rich and powerful transnational corporations and the national security state. Hard-won gains made by ordinary people are swept away.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Parenti, one of our most trenchant (and engaging) political analysts, exposes the ruthless agenda and hidden costs of the US empire. Documenting the pretexts and lies used to justify violent intervention and maldevelopment abroad, he convincingly demonstrates how the conversion to a global economy is a victory of finance capital over democracy. He also offers compelling alternatives for progressive change. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

Caustic? Polemic? Too real to be true?

As a history student, this isn't the scholarly work (heavily footnoted, dry, extensive bibliography) I've been trained to dissect. But Against Empire is a must for anybody interested in a behind-the-scenes look into US 'diplomacy,' especially the occasional conservative interested in both sides of the story. And it philosophically supersedes anything by the likes of Michael Moore. The crux of Parenti's argument: don't confuse capitalism for democracy!

Parenti will shock some, enlighten others

Parenti's Against Empire is a real eye-opener. Definitely a must read for anyone on the Radical left or interested in U.S. foreign policy. A good starting point for young activists.
