Because of its decadent content "Against the Grain" created quite a stir when it was first published and in breaking from the Naturalist school of literature Huysman's work established itself as a major piece of the Symbolist aesthetic.

    A Milestone

    An influence, or at least a foreshadowing, of the dadaists,, it's unsettling even in this jaded age. Even among contemporary artists, the literate among the cutting edge in extreme prose and 'alternative' music were certainly inspired by him, and know that he was first and best.

    Slow, muddling, centered on one character in the third person wi

    Slow, muddling, centered on one character in the third person with eloquent descriptions of interior colors and furnishings, very superficial development of the central character all from the perspective of our narrator. Don't even read it if it's free.
