Lambros Arnis, a man approaching eighty, decides to withdraw to a small town after a long and distinguished career in theatre criticism. He feels that both his age and the changing perceptions of art have pushed him to the margins. Andrina Lemoni, Arnis's partner for the past ten years, nearly forty years his junior, is a well-known actress whose successful career owes much to his presence in her life. Sibelle Oman, a French-Algerian ceramic artist and the owner of an unconventional seaside bar on a remote beach in Crete, was once Arnis's lover. Pascal Oman, Sibelle's forty-year-old son, is an internationally acclaimed photographer with a quiet, inward charm—a man in search of ways to tame the force of desire. Four characters, each with a deeply rooted past, whose current relationships are shaped by the preparation for a staging of Racine's Phèdre. A contemplative and psychological novel about aging, love, and the complexities of parent-child relationships.
