Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Joy Cowley's high-voltage heroine gets a dog in Agapanthus Hum and Major Bark, illus. by Jennifer Plecas. As much fun as its predecessors, this chipper chapter book does an expert job of balancing the quirky with the everyday. Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
An easy reader, this sequel to Agapanthus Hum and the Eye Glasses is snappy, fun to read, and exuberantly illustrated with Jennifer Pleca's cartoonish watercolors and ink. When Agapanthus and her good little Daddy and her good little Mommy go off to get a cat at the animal shelter, a very insistent puppy wins their hearts instead. Mommy tells her it's a "bitser" dog┬ża bit of this, a bit of that. And when Agapanthus's fizzy hum startles the dog and he barks, she decides to call him Major Bark. Five more short chapters detail Major Bark's puppy behavior and his first appearance at the Champion Dog Show, where an understanding judge gives him the award for smallest eyes. Cowley's mastery of the well-chosen word will have readers snickering happily while they smile fondly at Major and his antics. Adults may find this a little sappy but the situations and conversation are apt, the text is economical and funny, and new readers will lap it up. 2001, Philomel, $13.99. Ages 5 to 8. PreS-Gr 2-This easy-reader features Agapanthus Hum as she heads to the animal shelter to find a kitten. No cat can compare to the "squeaky little dog" that steals her heart and becomes part of the family with minimal protests from "good little Mommy" and "good little Daddy." Agapanthus's parents bolster her spirits when the puppy chews and destroys what he finds on the floor, and try to discourage her from entering the mutt in a purebred dog show. However, the child and her friends have faith in Major Bark, and the show yields some surprising results. As in Agapanthus Hum and the Eyeglasses (Philomel, 1999), Cowley's distinctive characters and use of language infuse this story with charm. With the animal asleep on her lap, she "felt as though she had swallowed the biggest smile in the world." Agapanthus conveys a wide range of feelings with an exuberance that's as heartwarming as the pup. Plecas's bright, watercolor cartoons feature lots of fuzzy ink lines and detail to capture and extend this story, and will keep beginning readers enthralled. Pair Major Bark with Biscuit, Mudge, Harry, and Martha for an all-star dog show at your school or public library.-Laura Scott, Baldwin Public Library, Birmingham, MI Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information.
