Overview

Agatha Raisin's marriage was put off when her ex-husband showed up, unfortunately alive. Fortunately, he was murdered and Agatha solved the crime. Now she is off to Cyprus to track down her ex-fiance. Instead of enjoying their planned honeymoon, however, they witness the murder of an obnoxious tourist. Two sets of terrible tourists surround the unhappy couple, arousing Agatha's suspicions. And, much to James' chagrin, she won't rest until she finds the killer. Unfortunately, it seems the killer also won't rest until Agatha is out of the picture. Agatha is forced to track down the murderer, try to rekindle her romance with James, and fend off a suave baronet, all while coping with the fact that it's always bathing suit season in Cyprus.

Editorial Reviews

Kirkus Reviews
The marriage of expublic relations whiz Agatha Raisin to cold, enigmatic James Lacey, who lives next door to her retirement cottage in the Cotswold village of Carsely, has fallen through (Agatha Raisin and the Murderous Marriage, 1996, etc.). James has taken off for Cyprus, the planned site of their aborted honeymoon, and Agatha, incomprehensibly, takes off after him. Soon after her arrival, on a day cruise in the harbor at Kyrenia, she meets an oddly mixed group of tourists—aristocratic Olivia Debenham, her broker husband George, and their older friend Harry Tembleton—spending much of their time in the company of low-class, tarty Rose Wilcox, her hard-drinking husband Trevor, and their elderly friend Angus King. Agatha has tracked down James and, on a platonic basis, is sharing his rented house. They've joined the oddball group at a disco one night when Rose is stabbed to death and Agatha and James are detained and questioned by Detective Inspector Lyall Pamir. A second murder in the group arouses all of Agatha's detecting fervor. She gets background info on them from her policeman friend Bill Wong in England; escapes a couple of attacks on her own life; plays around a bit with vacationing long time acquaintance Sir Charles Fraith; and bemoans James's disappearance just as she solves the case.

None of this nonsense can be taken seriously, least of all Agatha's obsession with the thoroughly off-putting James or plotting as full of holes as Swiss cheese. Only the author's blithe and breezy style and some interest in the historic sights of northern Cyprus could inspire most readers to stay the course.

Modern day Miss Marple with humour

I have loved every book in this series. This is a "cozy" mystery. Quick read. Very entertaining. Agatha Raisin is trying to lead a quiet average life after living the life of a succesful business woman. She tries a bit too hard and gets into the middle of murders often. The situations she gets herself into are often humouress. I hightly recommend any of this series.

    Highly recommend

I am hooked from the first book in this series. I can hardly wait to start the next book to see what Agatha is up to next. If you enjoy english mysteries you will love Agatha Raisin, she is delightful.
M.C. Beaton makes you feel like you are right there with Agatha every step of the way.

    Good. Can recommend it

As always, Agatha Raisin comes up trumps. A good read, with interesting information on Cyprus which I hope to visit in 2012. Will take it with me as my guide book!

    Another good Agatha Raisin mystery...

I read all of the more recent Agatha Raisin mysteries and loved them so much I decided to go back and order all of the earlier books as well. "Agatha Raisin and the Terrible Tourist" was another good Agatha adventure, this book taught me so much about Turkish history that I was not familiar with and as always I totally enjoyed Agatha's bumbling up her personal life and solving a murder at the same time, another great Agatha.

    BEATON HAS DONE BETTER!!!

The book has been well reviewed in the write up above from the publisher and critic. My thoughts are: The book is not as good as the first five were. I have read them all and this one just did not measure up to par. Agatha and James are in Cyprus. Maybe, that is one reason. I have come to know and like the people of Carsely and miss them being in the story. I also feel like I am reading about a 'Soap' on TV in this book. I Agatha chases after James one more time I think I will scream. I also did not like Charles. I though we were through with him in a previous book. I hope Ms. Beaton brings the troops back home in the next one and involves the locals again. If you are reading the whole series you can skip this one and if this is your first one, believe me, the first five are better.
