Overview

Catherine is dead.

At least that's what the FBI claims. They say there's no point investigating the strange disappearance any further. Instead they want Gaia to stay in Quantico to carry on the search for the Lollipop Murderer.

Gaia is convinced her partner is still alive -- and that she needs help. Even if it means putting the murder case on hold, Gaia must go after her.

But going AWOL means losing the support of the FBI. Gaia will be completely on her own and heading into danger. Because Catherine's abduction is far more complicated -- and more sinister -- than she realized. In fact, it's a whole new mystery.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Wolfson
There is a fair amount of suspension of disbelief that needs to occur when reading this YA thriller. For one, readers need to believe that the FBI would hire a nineteen-year old girl as an agent. (The FBI's web site says all trainees need to be at least twenty-three and a college grad.) Then the reader would have to believe that this newbie agent would be assigned the case of tracking down a serial killer. Teenager/FBI trainee Gaia Moore has gone AWOL from her assignment in order to rescue her best friend and fellow agent, Catherine, whom she believes has been abducted. Gaia, who was born with a genetic defect that makes her completely fearless, is chased through Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Maryland as she follows up leads and searches for Catherine. Along the way, she discovers a possible terrorist plot, falls for a cute guy, and evades other FBI agents with many more years of experience than she. Since this is the third in a series called "Fearless FBI," it is assumed that readers have accepted this unlikely premise enough to have read the first two. The book concludes with a blatant cliffhanger. Readers can look forward to the next book, Naked Eye, which is previewed at the end of this one.

Gr 9 Up-After attempting to convince the FBI to search for her partner, Gaia realizes that going AWOL is the only way that she will be able to help. The agency considers Catherine dead, but Gaia knows she is alive and desperately needs her help. As she searches for clues about her friend's whereabouts, Gaia also realizes that she has to run from the Bureau agents who are searching for her before she discovers what covert operations have put Catherine in danger. Unfortunately, the cliff-hanger ending leaves readers less than satisfied and is a blatant device to force them to purchase the next book in the series. Also frustrating are the minor editing errors that are found throughout the book. Purchase this title for those who are desperate to continue the story, but warn them of the abrupt ending.-Lynn Evarts, Sauk Prairie High School, Prairie du Sac, WI Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
