Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Agents of Light and Darkness, Simon R. Green’s macabre sequel to Something from the Nightside, pits John Taylor -- a private investigator with supernatural powers who can find anything -- against armies of irate angels and street gangs of sadistic demons.

John’s latest job is to find the Unholy Grail (the cup that Judas drank from at the Last Supper), an incredibly evil artifact that has been rumored to be somewhere in Nightside -- a subterranean otherworld beneath London where it is always three o’clock in the morning. The place permeates danger and is home to ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and nightmarish monstrosities of all shapes and sizes. When John is approached by a man named Jude (who says he’s from the Vatican) and is offered a boatload of money to locate the Unholy Grail, he has to agree, especially when he is told that Nightside -- and every creature in it -- could be destroyed were the chalice to fall into the wrong hands.

Green's many fans will undoubtedly devour the Nightside series, which is characterized by the same larger-than-life characters and breakneck pacing as the Owen Deathstalker sequence but is decidedly darker and owes more to hard-boiled mystery than to science fiction space opera. With a cast of characters that include antisocial bounty hunter Shotgun Suzie and Razor Eddie, a maniacal punk god with an odor problem, how can you go wrong? Concisely put, Green’s Nightside novels are as outrageous as they are entertaining. Paul Goat Allen

    I Also Recommend:

    Thrilling supernatural noir

Simon R. Green found his stride in the second book of the Nightside. Private eye John Taylor has returned to the Nightside; a dark, hidden place that lies in the shadows of London, where any vice or desire may be found for a price. Usually, the price is your soul.. or somebody else's.
John Taylor's haunted past and uncertain future are brought into harsh perspective for the first time, as he is hired to find the Unholy Grail, the chalice of Judas. The war that ensues will leave its mark upon Nightside for years to come.
This second book in the series truly begins to open the eyes of the reader to the darkness, depravity, and all-round great time that the Nightside has to offer, as John explorers its depths in his search. Simon R. Green has a fantastic noir style, told in John's voice, cutting words to their very bone to give you the tired, hard cynicism beneath. Nightside is a fringe world of grays, where even mortal enemies may set aside differences in light of greater threats.

As an avid reader, I found myself engrossed in the story of the Nightside, and the mystery of John Taylor. I recommend this to any who have grown weary of epic descriptions of foliage, drawn out and convoluted political turmoil.. who enjoy a good, engrossing story without unnecessary ornamentation.

    A dark, rollicking, adventure.

Hard go put down once you start. If you are new to Green's work, you are in for a fun ride.

    my favorite of the series

This one is my favorite Nightside novel, I must admit. I just found the story line so clever and fitting together perfectly. It bring out the best of the characters.I absolutely loved the ending. The whole series is excellent and I highly recommend it for fans of urban fantasy and the paranormal. I was never much into mystery or detective stories but I made an exception for these. I am very attatched to all of the characters at this point, but I agree, Razor Eddie is definately the best one.

    A return to the Darkness!

Green takes us back to Nightside is this adventurous tale of the Unholy Grail. As good, evil, and everything in between scramble for the ownership of the Grail, John Taylor accepts a case...in which he must get to it first! He must race against angles, both heavenly and the fallen, and powers that seem beyond compare. In this sequal of 'Something from the Nightside' Taylor struggles with all types of obstacles...some of which come from his own past!

great blending of Lovecraft and Holmes

Private investigator John Taylor works London¿s Nightside where gods, angels, demons and monsters hang out at three in the morning. He currently meets with Jessica Sorrow, perhaps the most dangerous essence in town. She believes in nothing so strongly she can turn anyone into nothingness. He survives that encounter at St. Jude, the only church in town, by giving her something to believe in her childhood teddy bear.
As John leaves, he sees a bedraggled soul shouting he owns the Grail. John wonders if the Holy Grail may actually be in Nightside. He begins a search, but this is not Jesus¿ Last Supper cup. This artifact is Judas¿ Unholy Grail also from the treacherous Last Supper. John knows that if he finds the evil cup, he must be extra cautious. He fears its power to corrupt the most innocent soul. He also knows all the creatures of the night want the evil goblet that would give them immense power.
The NIGHTSIDE novels are a great blending of Lovecraft and Holmes that becomes a delightful private investigative fantasy tale. The latest entry is an action-packed thriller in which John searches for the Unholy Grail while the AGENTS OF LIGHT AND DARKNESS plan to take away the object if he succeeds on his quest. John is a tremendous protagonist who serves as the focus that makes this eerie center of weirdness seem real. Anyone who appreciates a well-written offbeat story will want to journey to Nightside. However, upon return to reality fans will ponder what type of mind could create such an awesome strange story like this one.
Harriet Klausner
