Just as Anglican priest James Ferry wrote about coming to grips with his gay identity in In the Courts of the Lord (Crossroad, 1994), Hannon, a pastor for 25 years, writes of struggling with his sexuality while living as a married man in a small Christian town and serving in the Presbyterian Church. Reflected in both books is the essential teaching of a Christian church to embrace differences among people and a call to "come out" and follow Christ. Early in his life, Hannon knew his sexuality but hoped it was a phase. He married and spend 22 years with his wife, who understood his sexuality but for the sake of the children thought it best to keep a two-parent household. In the meantime, the culture of the world was undergoing radical changes, reflected in the teaching of the Gospels and in ministry. Hannon tells his story through condensed sermons and clergy reaction to show how the Gospels are reflected in the struggles of his own life.
