Reviewer: John F. Moran, MD (Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine)
Description: This book contains short descriptions of cardiac diseases from A-W or AIDS to Wolff-Parkinson-White. It is edited by Dr. Joseph Alpert with 85 contributors.
Purpose: This work is the result of discussion and development by the American Heart Association Council on Clinical Cardiology whose purpose was to provide a 5-minute consultation on selected cardiac entities for busy clinicians.
Audience: The target audience is the busy clinician, whether he/she is a physician of internal medicine, cardiology, or cardiovascular surgery. Even residents and medical students in cardiology would find this worthwhile for a short, pertinent, focused piece of information on a disease.
Features: Each of the 141 topics is briefly described with comments on epidemiology and etiology. These are followed by bullet points on symptoms, signs, diagnosis, and general and specific management options. In addition, the ICD 9 codes and a pertinent bibliography is included. There are pertinent articles covering topics from anomalous coronary artery or anomalous pulmonary veins, pre and post-op cardiac surgery to ventricular septal defect and ventricular tachycardia. All are two pages long. An appendix of short articles on topics such as adenosine, angiogenesis, and endothelin is included as is an appendix of tables on diagnosis and treatment.
Assessment: This interesting book provides focused information for a busy clinician. In a matter of a few minutes, pertinent information can be easily obtained. It is certainly a worthwhile book.

Preface

Excerpt from the Preface:

The publication of this book culminates several years of intense discussion and work with the American Heart Association's Council on Clinical Cardiology...

The success of the condensed format employed in this book has been proven over the years in a number of primary care and specialty areas. I anticipate that this text will be equally successful. By spending five minutes with the text, a physician or other healthcare worker can obtain a reasonable understanding of a specific disease entity from a number of view points. In addition, tables and definitions appended to the text are added benefits to the time-conscious seeker of knowledge in cardiovascular disease...--Joseph S. Alpert.
