Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Lori A. Edwards, BSN, MPH, RN (Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing)
Description: This is an extensive, in-depth description of the practice of holistic nursing based on the five core values of the American Holistic Nurse's Association (AHNA).
Purpose: The purpose is to provide nurses with a framework and a thorough reference guide in order to practice according to AHNA's Standards of Practice. These objectives are met by the authors. This book is much needed as the concept of holistic nursing is presented in a more concrete and practical manner. An outstanding summary of the history of the AHNA is included, providing a frame of reference to the purpose of this work.
Audience: The book is for nurses, but specifically holistic nurses. The authors also aim to prepare nurses for the certification exam in holistic nursing. This is a good links to Dossey's Core Curriculum for Holistic Nursing (American Holistic Nurses Association, 1997).
Features: The book is divided into chapters based on the five core values. Each chapter includes the standards of practice outlined under these core values. Of particular value are the case studies in which the standards of practice are described. These are good illustrations of how a nurse carries out a specific standard of practice, or in some cases how they may not be carried out and thus the nurse does not demonstrate holistic nursing. Each standard of practice is outlined with a table of specific concepts, knowledge, and required skills. Nursing activities are described in a separate boxed format. The format is well done. It is visually appealing and easy to follow. The links to nursing diagnoses are exceptional. The appendixes include outstanding resources and assessment tools.
Assessment: This is an excellent addition to the holistic nursing field. The authors make the conceptual framework and philosophy of holistic nursing so much more concrete and specific. Nurses are often left wondering, "So, how do you do holistic nursing?" This book is the practical and practice-oriented answer to that question.
