Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 6 Up-Both of these well-written titles have a handsome format and average-quality black-and-white illustrations, but neither of them gives information on the background of the author. Meier seeks to explain the increased and ever-earlier sexual activity among American teens, the soaring pregnancy rates in that group, and the options available to them. Interviews with young people reveal a great deal of ignorance and misinformation, as well as moral confusion. It is clear that those young people who are poor, without hope for the future and lacking self-esteem, are especially at risk. The difficulties- medical, financial, and social- and the limited prospects that await teen parents are realistically presented. The author argues for sex education and school clinics that distribute contraceptives. Along with statistical information, there are lists of myths about sex and descriptions of birth control methods. This title is on a par with Janet Bode's Kids Still Having Kids (Watts, 1992), a standard. Sirimarco covers the probable origins, definitions, transmission, symptoms, prognosis, therapies, and upcoming human-vaccine tests for AIDS. She attacks myths and the prejudice and discrimination inflicted on victims. There is a frank presentation of what constitutes safe sex or, at least, low-risk sex. This book gives AIDS a human face with stories of Ryan White, Magic Johnson, and Arthur Ashe, with an excellent chapter on reaching out to those with HIV and AIDS. Sirimarco's target audience is young people who believe that nothing can happen to them. Elaine Landau's We Have AIDS (Watts, 1990), Margaret Hyde's AIDS (Walker, 1987), and Jeanne Blake's Risky Times (Workman, 1990) are comparable titles. Michael Ford's 100 Questions & Answers about AIDS (New Discovery, 1992), a superior work that does not attempt to list too many specific behaviors under the heading of ``casual contact,'' should be the prime reference source.-Libby K. White, Schenectady County Public Library, NY
