Children's LiteratureAuthor Michelle Houle thoroughly discusses many issues regarding AIDS and its effects throughout the world. The history of the AIDS epidemic and the specifics of the disease are detailed. Facts regarding the transmission of the disease are also discussed. The author devotes much attention to the impact of AIDS on the entire world, quoting statistics and using maps to indicate the areas affected. The devastating effects of this epidemic on the continent of Africa are clearly spelled out for the reader. The importance of education and awareness in dealing with AIDS is also discussed. Stories from real people impacted by this disease are shared with the reader, including the story of Ryan White. This book presents a well-balanced and scientific view of the AIDS epidemic and includes information that all young adults should have. However, as informative as this book is, there are several sections in the book that are highly questionable reading for preteens. The reading level of this book is not difficult, but the subject matter and graphic details used to describe the transmission of the disease are meant for a more mature reader. Some of the issues may be found to be highly sensitive as well. This book is one in the "Issues in Focus" series. 2003, Enslow Publishers, Ages 15 to 18.
