With the boundless harmonies and melodies of vintage Stevie Wonder and Donny Hathaway floating through his Afro-coiffed head, newcomer Musiq Soulchild summons the creative roots of '70s soul music. But like his neo-soul contemporaries D'Angelo and Lauryn Hill, Musiq gives the music of his forebears a new-jack twist on his debut, Aijuswanaseing. He cross-pollinates classic soul with a variety of sounds -- gospel on the spirited ballad "You Be Alright," hip-hop on "L' Is Gone," which includes a live band interpretation of the kick-drum driven beat of the Roots' "Next Movement," and jam-session funk on a remake of the Patrice Rushen classic "Settle for My Love." He cross-pollinates classic soul with a variety of sounds -- gospel on the spirited ballad "You Be Alright," hip-hop on "L' Is Gone," which includes a live band interpretation of the kick-drum driven beat of the Roots' "Next Movement," and jam-session funk on a remake of the Patrice Rushen classic "Settle for My Love." From the carefree lead single "Sunny Just Friends" which appeared on the Nutty Professor II soundtrack to the playful "Girl Next Door" -- which was cowritten by fellow Philadelphian Jill Scott -- the 23-year-old scores major points with the ladies with sweet sentiments such as "If there's anything that you want, you need/Don't be afraid to ask 'cause you're my girl." With Aijuswanaseing, Musiq not only honors the soulful good vibe of his favorites, he also contributes to the next wave of soul classics, which should in turn influence another generation of inspired musicians. All Music Guide - Kerry L. Smith
With his 2000 debut album, Aijuswanaseing I Just Want to Sing, Musiq Soulchild is sure to make an indelible mark on the R&B soundscape. Aijuswanaseing is a remarkable collection of songs that successfully showcases Soulchild's vocal talent and versatility as he crisscrosses the analogous styles of R&B, soul, and rap. On the up-tempo track "Girl Next Door," the singer demonstrates the smooth, rich texture of his voice. "Girl Next Door" is a romantic exchange that features the vocal prowess of Ayana of the duo Aaries. Tracks like the confident and playful "Just Friends" and the indelibly funky "My Girl" pick up the pace of the album, suggesting the possibility for future dancefloor remixes. The somber, soul-searching track "Mary Go Round" and the earnest sentiments on "Love" display Musiq's mellow, sincere side. The slow-paced wonder quality of "143" echoes a snippet of the style of fellow soul sista Erykah Badu not a surprise since Musiq lists her high on his list of influences. There is also an apparent hint of the likes of Soulchild's idol Stevie Wonder in the rhythmic finger-snapping beat and experimental vocal riffs on "143," serving as evidence that Soulchild's voice is strong enough to stand on its own. The album is a casual yet valiant excursion that mirrors the many faces of a model swooner: a calm, cool, and collected attitude, mixed with a light sense of humor and a healthy serving of poise, swank, and sensitivity. Aijuswanaseing paints an aural portrait of this model combination which is best brought to life on the slyly flirtatious "Just Friends Sunny," which is featured on the Nutty Professor II soundtrack Universal, 2000. Aijuswanaseing is the perfect backdrop for an intimate candlelit evening or just a casual stroll on a sunny afternoon.

    Setting the Standard

Personally this song has got a brother through a couple of bad relationships. If you cannot relate to the realness and the authentic emotion Musiq displays on each track you have never truly been in love. Hands down the hottest song on the album is Mary Go Round... listen 2 the second verse. This album is a definite classic cop it enjoy it

Musiq is by far my favorite R&B male. I really appreciate his staying away from ''booty R&B'' and instead injecting some real soul into his cuts. This is an album you can put on with your girl and not worry about havin to get off the couch to hit to forward button on your cd player. I had the opportuniy to see Musiq, and he plays live with turntables. I appreciate that cross genre flavor he gets when he throws a little hip hop in. Definite must buy, cause you guys no aint no girl feelin it when you're bumpin hip-hop when she's in the car. I can't wait for Juslisen to drop, I think it comes out the first week of May!

    In Love with Musiq

musiq is definately one of the most talented artists of our time. He has a mello tone with a touch of sensuality. He's attractive and has a very sexy and soothing voice. His lyrics actually have meaning and have made me re-think some choices in my life. If you don't have it buy it.

When I first heard the Cd i was in sacramento. I was looking to spend my money on whatever I wanted. So I started to hear samples of music and out of nowhere I began to listen to the soul child. At first I was suprised to hear such talent, but I was never into that type of music. I began to listen more and more. It became very addicting. I started to love the beats and off rhythms that were provided in the songs. Most of them didn't even rhyme, but most were so well composed, it was great. I recommomend that every one invest into his music, he's great and very talented.

I personally feel that the soul child is the new generation soul. It has a great taste of soul, blues, and hiphop. His songs relate to everyday life. They speak of nothing but truth to words when they're sung. He brings out the beat of each song with his wonderful voice. From the time I first heard this cd, it made me addicted. I never let it out of my sight. It was one of those that stood out in my mind. I found myself humming the tune to myself. The melodies are very creative. Some of his song dont even rhyme, but the format is just so awsome that it doen't even matter.

The soul child is a very brilliant singer and songwriter. When I first heared his cd I was in a Virgin Mega Store and I just picked it up. Brought it home and could not take the cd out of the cd player. He so beautiful he makes my pikle tickle. I think hes so sexy, coming from a guy, he has nice lips. I wish I could just wrap him up in my blanket of love, and never let go.

    True Musiq

Musiq's ''Aijuswanaseing'' is one of the best CD's I have ever bought. Unlike many artists today, you can really feel emotions behind his lyrics. The best part is that they're original. Somehow, you can relate to atleast one of his songs. I bought this CD yesterday and I haven't stopped playing it (without skipping). This CD just sets a relax and chill mood yet you wanna get up and dance. My favorites so far are Girl Next Door (2), Love (7), Speechless (12), Poparazzi (13), and Settle For My Love (14). This is definitely a CD I will be listening to for a while.

A Newer Style of R&B / Hip Hop Continues To Gain Popularity

Musiq Soulchild is a new vibe along the lines of D'Angelo, Jill Scott, etc. Instead of dwelling on singing about sex sex sex, he moves around the entire subject of ''Love'' Overall a very good album.

    Good Musiq!

I guess I could give him 5 stars just because I like how he looks in a wrap, I guess I could give him 5 stars just because I like track 7, I could give him 5 stars just because he reminds me, I could give him 5 stars just because he is from Philly, but I give him 5 stars because the first one is for the hypnotic sound, the second star is for the voice of innocence, the third star is for the deep mentality, the fourth star is for the artistic revelation and fifth is for good musiq!
