All Music Guide - Carrie Nieman
Widespread Panic's fourth album features tighter, more song-oriented writing. The searing guitar of the opening tune, "Little Kin," introduces a grittier album than the previous year's Everyday. Ain't Life Grand increased Widespread Panic's fan base dramatically and gave them a taste of what continued radio play could mean for the band.

    Jammin' Good Time

Ain't Life Grand is Widespread Panic's fourth album and it is great music and also a great buy. It is the first Panic album that I ever heard, and I am a total ''Spread-Head'' now. Most people that I have talked to claim that this album had done the same thing to them. Especially if you are not really into hippy bands this album and especially the title track ''Ain't Life Grand'' are extremely impressive and show off the bands outstandingly impressive musical talent. Sonny Oritz, the band's hand percussionist, really begins to let loose and show how talented he is in this album. Also J.B., Schools and the other band members put on a supurb performance. This CD has a real nice upbeat, happy and mellow feel to it that is sure to keep you listening. The high-energy songs Blackout Blues, and Fishwater have a great jam to them that you can really feel deep down. Also songs like LA, and Little Kin have nice, smooth, relaxing sounds to them. There is also a cool hidden track on this CD. See if you can find it.
