Overview

On September 8, 2001, the Air Force decommissioned SAM 27000 and gave it on permanent loan to the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, CA. Documentary filmmakers Joel Haskell Cohen and Michael Cohen have chronicled the historic final days of the most famous aircraft in the world.

The Cohens cameras were rolling from the moment SAM 27000 touched down for the final time at San Bernardino International Airport in California where it was disassembled piece by piece in one of the more complex engineering projects in the history of modern aviation. They followed its perilous 102 mile midnight journey by truck to the Reagan Presidential Library where it was completely reconstructed in a massive new indoor pavilion. On October 21, 2005 they captured its rededication as a national historic treasure by President and Mrs. Bush and by Former First Lady Nancy Reagan.

With stunning photography and personal insight and commentary from former presidents and former First Lady Nancy Reagan, Joel and Michael Cohen tell the story of a triumph of engineering carried out through the sheer determination and patriotism of hundreds of men and women committed to preserving history.

Meet the Author

Michael Steven Cohen: prior to graduating from the California State University system with a degree in industrial design (product design), Michael Cohen worked for two small design firms and created new products that were successfully marketed by organizations like Xerox Corp., Litton Industries, the United States Navy, Red-E-Kamp, Perma Plaque, Dell Computers, Callen Data Systems, and Aerolog Industries.

Joel Haskel Cohen: when Joel moved his family to Los Angeles in the mid-sixties to pursue his burgeoning acting career, no one, least of all Joel, could have imagined the new direction his life was about to take. A day job turned into a full-blown career as one of the industrys top managers, responsible for discovering, developing, and guiding some of the top rock acts and most successful actors in the past thirty years, including Three Dog Night, Cheech & Chong, Steely Dan, David Soul, Carl Weathers, and Willie Aames.

Historical resource and White House Collectible

I am proud to have served on board Air Force One. It was my honor to have been serving then as Military Aide to President Ronald Reagan. I was honored to serve our country in that capacity. As a former US Air Force fighter pilot, US Air Force Thunderbird pilot, Military Aide to the President, Captain for American Airlines, Chief Pilot and Flight Operations Manager for American Airlines, Board Member on the National Transportation Safety Board, and currently Vice President of Training and Flight Operations for Airbus, I would certainly consider myself to be an aviation, military and Presidential history authoritative source and enthusiast. The extraordinary display of exclusive imagery makes Air Force One, The Final Mission both a historical resource and White House Collectible. In this book Joel and Michael Cohen provide unique Presidential insight relative to this purpose-built aircraft that served as secure transport for seven Presidents of the United States of America. The Cohens deliver an exceptional historical lens regarding this wondrous aircraft and the inspiration it provides to both leaders and citizens of the free world. Through a series of engineering marvels, documented in text and photography by the Cohens, Air Force One 27000 is now proudly displayed in a spectacular pavilion at the Reagan Library in Simi Valley, California. The Cohen's book, Air Force One: The Final Mission, is proudly displayed prominently in my home. Lt. Colonel Steve Chealander USAF (Ret.) Military Aide to President Ronald Reagan
