Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Kris Sauer
Imagine living on a ship with its own runway, one that is 24-stories tall and longer than three football fields! It's a virtual floating city, with up to 6,000 crew members. What kind of ship is this? It's an aircraft carrier, capable of launching up to 85 airplanes and helicopters to patrol oceans and drop bombs or fire guns at the enemy, if necessary. Early readers who love big machines will find much to like in this nonfiction book about aircraft carriers. Intended for readers in first grade and up, some early readers may need a bit of support in tackling this book. The author does a good job of using simple text and short sentences, but some difficult words are inevitable given the genre. Readers will enjoy learning about the development of the aircraft carrier, its capabilities, and the crew that guides it. Excellent photography supports the text throughout. Several aircraft carriers are profiled, including: Great Britain's Colossus Class carriers, small and light ships from the 1940s carried 48 airplanes; the Nimitz Class carrier from the United States, enormous nuclear-powered ships capable of staying at sea for years at a time; and France's Charles de Gaulle, ships that handle high waves while avoiding detection on radar. Included are a brief glossary, index and table of contents, in addition to web site and further reading suggestions. Part of the eight-title "Built for Battle" series, this title is as consistently well-written as the others in the series, and would be a welcome addition to any classroom or library looking to increase its nonfiction selection aimed at younger readers.
