Overview

- Young men suddenly on their own behind enemy lines

- Written by an authority on pilot survival, escape, and evasion who had access to the official USAAF after-action reports

- The author's research includes retracing actual evasion routes with some of the airmen

Aircraft Down! tells the thrilling stories of six extraordinary evasion adventures set in Holland, Belgium, France, Spain, Italy, Albania, and Greece between 1941 and 1945. In 1944 alone, nearly 30,000 American airmen survived bailing out of, or crash landing, their aircraft in Europe. Most were captured immediately, but others, against tremendous odds, managed to evade their pursuers. Aircraft Down! is based on extensive interviews with the airmen and some of the courageous Europeans who helped them at the risk of their own lives. For everyone with a taste for true stories of courage in the face of great danger.
