Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Seems like every web developer wants to learn Ajax these days. No wonder: Ajax lets you finally create web applications that look and work as well as desktop applications. With the world coming to Ajax, there's a premium on learning it fast. For many people, the best way to learn something fast is to learn it visually. Those are the folks Ajax: Your Visual Blueprint for Creating Rich Internet Applications was created for.

You may have seen other books in the Your Visual Blueprint series -- on PHP and JavaScript, for instance. If so, you know they offer distilled, step-by-step instructions for each key task, with plenty of screen captures showing what to do, and what happens when you do it. The accompanying narrative -- here written by Steven Holzner, one of the world's most respected and prolific programming authors -- is exceptionally focused and useful.

Holzner shows what makes Ajax so valuable by introducing you to some of the Web's best Ajax applications. Next, you'll dive right into creating Ajax using JavaScript (a language he's been writing about for over a decade). Holzner next turns to the second major component of Ajax, XMLHttpRequest (he's also written one of the industry's best books on XML. Beginning to see a pattern here?)

You'll learn to do increasingly sophisticated things with Ajax: creating server-side mouseovers, using Google Suggest to implement live search, validating data, safely calling different domains. Holzner then introduces a series of third-party tools and frameworks that make Ajax development more efficient, including AJAXLib, XHConn, SACK, Sarissa, RICO, SAJAX, Xajax, and LibAjax.

There's plenty more (a full chapter on using CSS with Ajax is especially worth mentioning). All of it visual, practical, and intensely useful. Bill Camarda, from the September 2006 Read Only

    Not for the noob

I was hoping for a book that would teach Ajax, and would address getting and postinfo to a database. The book lacks details and is a disappointment. I give two stars only because it might be handy one day and has some good ideas. Just don't buy it if you're wanting to learn Ajax.
