K-Gr 2—This story depicts a reality that many immigrant children must face. Ana Patino is adjusting to her new life in the United States, as is her mother, who has very little command of the English language. The woman spends her time caring for her children at home and finds her inability to communicate in English disadvantageous when her son becomes ill. Ana and her father convince Mama to take English classes. As she passes her tests with flying colors and grows in confidence in her ability to stand up for herself, she starts to feel comfortable in this new country, which is now her home. Earth-toned oil paintings capture the gamut of emotions that the characters must weather as they progress through this brief episode of their lives. An excellent title for immigrant populations.—Rhonda Jeffers, Coweta Public Library System, Newnan, GA
